How come that grapple looks nothing like the one on the PT site...

According to our research on this here forum, the turf tires do about as well as the bar treads on everything except mud, and they are gentler on turf. We're going to use it as a lawn mower a lot more often than heavy excavation.

I would have done turf too but for the muddy clay we have here. Seems like there would be more rubber between sharp things and the inside of the tire and should have at least as good if not better traction in most situations.
BTW that's a pretty tractor.

Congratulations and enjoy learning how to operate your new tool.
One thing to be aware of, which your grapple will help prevent, but a bucket could cause, is that if you have a bunch of branches, logs, etc... in the front and you push into a brush pile or down a narrow wooded path, the logs or brush can catch on something and push back into the operator area and actually push the joystick back, which causes the load to raise, which brings the load closer tothe joystick, which makes it go up further, etc...
This is one of those situations that comes with complacency and lack of operator experience. Just take your feet off the pedals and the forwrd motion stops. Then back out of the situation slowly.
So, just take the time to get used to it and keep an eye on your surroundings. You both will do fine and get tons of work done faster than you ever thought possible.

Good stuff - before I bought, I was never aware of the PT in my research. I have to say they are pretty impressive machines (not that I am unhappy)
Not sure how I would feel about sharing seat time - I don't like my wife driving my truck, even though I know she is more than capable. So far she has no interest in the tractor....

Very nice looking tractor. I've always liked the red ones. I have a set of AG's for my Kubota. I took them off and went with a turf for all around use. I like the turf much better.valjo said:

Yeah, I hear ya Nubota but as long as he's showing an interest, I can't exactly say 'no'.
Just kidding. I guess I'm lucky because my husband is happy to share the equipment.

Based upon my experience with the brush cutter, I don't think that you would have been happy with turf tires. The brush cutter leaves lots of sharp bits lying around.

I have turfs on our PT425. They work fine on the mowing. They work fine on the paved driveway when plowing snow. Excellent, for that matter. On grassy side slopes, snow or wet grass, they crab walk down the slope easily. In the woods, they grip the forest floor well. I have never been stuck. In sand, they work very well in that they spin on the sand instead of digging a hole. However, they are only 2 ply and puncture easily with torns such as in brush hogging rose bushes.
Get your self some slime and put it in at double the recommended dosage now, before you get a leak.

It is available at TSC and some auto parts stores, NAPA, tractor shops, etc...Some folks use a product by Gempler's (SP?) that they like better than slime.
