I had added this question to the end of another post, but I think it may have been buried.
I have been reading all the posts of front verses rear snowblowers. I read that the rear mounted is a lot less expensive, and some apparently like the idea of leaving the FEL installed.

Not being tractor wise I would like to ask what may surely be an obvious no brainer question, but for me I don't know.

When reading tractor specs for a unit that has both a rear and mid mount PTO, and it is stated for example that the PTO HP =18 does that mean that both the rear and the mid mount are 18HP. I know you don't have the option to install the same blower on either the front or rear.

But if you could I wanted to illiminate the rear PTO installed blower being able to throw snow futher than the same blower installed on the front using the mid-mount PTO.

In the spec's, a tractor has a rated engine HP and the PTO HP (PTO always being slightly less). As far as I know, the PTO HP is the same at both rear and mid connections. I've studied a lot of tractor brochures, and have never seen a distinction.

What are you trying to do, mount a blower on both ends of the tractor. I don't understand your question.

Thanks REV. No I guess I should have said I wondered if there would be any difference in a given snowblower performance between powering the blower from the rear or mid mounted PTO.

I was just trying to avoid the issue of (if) I purchased a front blower that the dealer might say to me later "Oh you should have bought a rear blower they throw the snow further."

I know one thing what ever I eventually get, a soft sided cab is in my future, I cleared the snow out again today and I am so sick and tired of the wind changing and making me look like frosty the snowman.

There is no noticeable difference in HP between mid or rear PTO. While some people swear by rear mount, most of the time that's because their tractor may not have a front mount snow blower option (in JD that's pretty much anything over a 3xxx series). If you like craning your neck while you snowblow, that's an option. I would go front mount if at all possible though, as its much easier ergonomically. My $.02

ive looked into both the front and rear snowblower issues for the past 2 months, and it is confusing. If you mount a snowblower on the front, powered by a mid PTO, you will have to remove the loader and mount the blower to a sub-frame. If you mount to the rear, you can leave the loader installed to use in the areas where you cant blow.

Im going to order a LOADER mounted front snowblower for my tractor, but that will run off of hydraulic hoses attached to a rear 3 point mounted, rear PTO driven hydraulic pump. I need this because i want to be able to lift the blower up to reach the piles of snow that shed off of my 3 outbuildings. I get piles 5 feet high.

im also going to order a front blade for the slush. There is no one perfect solutiuon.
