Hello:
I'm in the market for a new tractor. About 23 years ago I bought a Kubota T1600. Nice little tractor but the trans went after about 11 years. I traded that up for a Kubota GR2100 which, after 12 years, is also starting to have trans problems (trans overheats and leaks fluid). I see where Kubota still gets good reviews for quality but I think that pertains to the higher end equipment and not the lower end garden tractors. So, I'm starting to look at John Deere. I think the equivalent (at least in price) would be the X580 or the X590. I have the Johnny Bucket Jr plow and bucket on the Kubota GR2100 and these will match up with the JD X580/X590 (I will need to purchase a different adapter for the front end but everything else should work fine). I don't have a lot of trees to trim around so I don't think I'll miss the Glide Steer (I had to replace the cables twice). The Kubota has scaled down 4WD but other than possibly during pushing snow, I don't think I'll miss that either.

I don't see much in terms of reviews of the X580 or X590, so any info anyone would like to share would be greatly appreciated.

Also, what kind of price cut should I expect from the dealer (i.e. 10% off of MSRP ?).

Thanks in advance,
Mike

Might be best to take the question to the garden tractor section of this forum. Would probably get more help and opinions there. Mostly discussions of SCUT (small compact utility tractors), CUT (compact utility tractors) and utility tractors here. Good luck in your search.

Nothing wrong with posting here about garden tractors first of all. I suspect the x590 has had limited sales so far and would say that the ztr mowers are outselling the tractor designs now. I recommend you look at all the various types today and all the brands before deciding on what works best for you. There are a lot of new offerings to choose from.

When I purchased my last L&G tractor new I got 15% off the msrp. This tractor the x749 was ordered and came in within three weeks. It has been a good tractor/mower for the last 6 years and really like it. With the diesel, 4x4, 4ws, 3ph and rear 540 pto it has been everything I wanted for lawn mowing and lawn maintenance. I will say that most people here don't agree with me, most want a fel and load the tires for extra weight. That is okay just not what I want in a mower.

Most of the new buyers are buying the sub compact tractors with a fel and maybe a backhoe. I haven't seen any offered with 4 wheel steer yet so these are more cumbersome. The advantage to the subcut is it is more versatile in that it can do most things well enough to get by. Others are buying the zero turns for fast mowing speeds and good cut quality.

Mike,

I'm curious if you've consideted buying a small sub compact with a front valve but no front end loader. This would give you the option of having a future front end loader if you chose . . But kerp the price down.

Either you could consider a kubota bx1870 or a Massey GC1705. In either case they would have a more commercial weight of construction and power steering and small 3 cylinder engines with more power if needed. You'd also get less maintenance and better fuel efficiency.

Just a thought. Alot depends on your land size and needs. And Jenkinsph is a resource if you were looking for somethong between garden tractor and sub compact tractor.

I agree with your statement on the quality of the low end Kubotas, but IMO the low end John Deers are worse. What is the intended use of this machine?
