New Tractor owner in search of Diesel gas containers

I know an elderly guy that pumped gas into his near new TYM tractor by mistake. He started it up, drove a couple blocks and it wasn't running right... He parked it, then realizing what he had done, and called his TYM dealer. The TYM dealer came out, siphoned the gas out, bled the system, filled with diesel and started it up.

It ran just fine and off the guy went, and the tractor had no problems after that either...

He was lucky there was enough diesel in there to mix with the gas.

I know the old timers used to mix one gallon of gas and two gallons of kerosene to a tankful of diesel to keep it from gelling in the winter... damned things would bellow white smoke and sound like ****.... but they ran, and it served the purpose.

Get any higher than 20 or 30%, and you run the risk of SERIOUS detonation failure.

IMG_1310.JPGDon't even need a funnel with these, have a long spout with them.

Walmart in my area has Yellow diesel cans. I don't use the spout except as a lid. I have a big funnel with a screen filter on it.

We had a driver put gas in one od our diesels,

$1,700 later......
I've experienced a couple of rental VW Jetta diesels in Germany in the pre-2007 time period (thus they were not Common Rail). Both times the guy filling the tank realized he had done a whoops before too much was put in.
The last time he put in well less than a quarter tank of gas, the rest diesel. We were in Heidelberg. I vividly remember several times coming out of the bars, going to the parking garage, it wouldn't start. We got one guy on each corner and just shook the car like the dickens to mix the diesel/gas.
It would fire up.

You're going to get tired of filling up 5 gallon cans all the time to refill the tractor. Since you're going to have to spend some money anyway (those yellow fuel cans aren't cheap), you might as well get a larger tank now and do whatever is required to buy red dye diesel (I'm in Texas and we have to register with the state before we're allowed to buy it).

I bought a 55 gallon barrel ($35 here in the boonies, if I'd gotten one on a trip to Houston, it'd have been $20) and then put the following parts together to pump it.

Amazon.com: Lumax LX-1318 Gray Rotary Barrel Pump: Automotive
Apache 99276 3/4" Manual Gravity Flow Fuel Nozzle Kit: Hose Assemblies: Amazon.com: Industrial & Scientific
Amazon.com: GOLDENROD 496-3/4 WATER-BLOCK FILTER (56591) Bowl Fuel Tank Filter with 3/4" NPT Top Cap: Automotive
FasParts 1" Hose ID / Hose Barb to 3/4" Male NPT MIP MPT Straight Brass Fitting Fuel / Air / Water / Boat / Gas / Oil WOG: Amazon.com: Industrial & Scientific

Total investment was about $200 and I saved $27 in tax the first time I filled the barrel with red dye diesel. It's a whole lot easier to fill the tractor this way and when it's time to refill the barrel, I just use the forks to load it into the back of the truck on a pallet.

Actually, the tech, who's a friend of mine, told me he was pretty much running on straight gas... The guy topped off the empty tank at a gas station and then drove away... lol

There's a chart in the owners manual of my Deutz, that tells how much gas to mix in diesel, for winter use...

Wish I would have learned about the no spill cans before I bought my last batch of cans. I would have liked to try them.

Walmart had the lowest price yellow diesel cans when I bought mine. I bought the high volume spout and vent kits from tractor supply and retrofitted all before I bothered trying to use them.

You are kidding about wanting to try those no spill cans right:thumbdown: They suck hands down. I agree with the yellow cans at Wally mart. I sure don't use the stupid pour spout though, way too slow. I use a funnel with a plastic paint strainer in it or my magic funnel if I want to wait for that slow thing .
All in all I can't see anything "good" about the new style cans. They cost too much and only hold 5 gallons. The best cans I ever saw were the Canadian 6 Imperial Gallon cans. Those puppys, a dying species are great and hold almost 7 gallons .

Yeah, having a fill opening 3X larger than El Cheapos, a handle on the top and back, enough room to fill it with five gallons and have expansion space, a window to see fill level, and a vented, metering spout - all "sucks hands down."

I have an el Cheapo from Tractor Supply. If you sniff it you can smell China.
