On my 986, there is just the fill hole on the head next to the injector. No provision for heating that I can see. I could add a system like you show on yours fairly easily tho.

We just got power back after a 40 hour outage thanks to the New England ice storm. I used the 986 to haul the generator up to the house.

When I went to put it away last night, the 986 was not disposed to start and I figured I'd try the "crankcase oil in the reservoir" deal as mentioned in the manual.

I was more than a little surprised when it cranked right up. Still not sure how that works without glow plugs or some other source of heat.

I checked with some folks on another tractor board, and the concensus seems to be that the oil fills a bit more of the cylinder, bumping the compression up to aid starting.

Looking at the manual for that model of Lombardini, I also found that pulling out on the stop lever (vice turning it, which is what stops the engine) increases the stroke on the injector pump, squirting a bit more fuel into the cylinder which also helps.

It's 15º in my garage as of an hour ago. I put some oil in the reservoir, pulled the stop lever out and hit the starter and I don't think that ol' gal made two full revolutions before she fired off.

Not bad for a 40-ish year old engine. In fact, my John Deere should start that good!

I had noted a while back at the impressive work you had done on your Pasquali tractor. I am curious if you have any further thoughts on the repair itself.

As I said in post # 16 at some point I would be using some of your ideas to beef up my Pasquali 997 transmission case.

It turns out not only did I destroy the pinion gear I also cracked the inside of the case as noted by the yellow line in the photo.

I am reluctant to go the welding route on the crack. That would involve tearing the case apart completely and a lot more expense i.e. finding someone who can really weld. Its not out of the question I am just reluctant. This tractor has been out of commission for over two years and I was in the process of putting it back together with a new pinion when I found the crack.

I was hoping that putting in a number of cross ties would by it self add enough strength to do the job. Somewhat like the green lines in the photos.

Have any thoughts?

I replied to Joe on the PM forum- follow the above link in my post. Good replies there by others too! I finally got around to getting a couple pictures of the GM Si alternator on my tractor. Trouble free charging! Also the weight that hangs on the 3 point, each one is 50lb. Works well, we keep only enough weight on there to get the current job done. Thanks for looking!
