Here are some shots of the first modifications I have made to the
L45.
I am trying to avoid purchasing a float. I have a truck that can tow 14,000 pounds, a trailer that can take the weight and a Class A license to do it legally. However, a 14' trailer is a little short so I can't use the tube that goes through the loader arms to chain the front. I therefore decided to add a hook to the front bumper which can be used for tie down purposes as well as pulling if need be. I don't like to pull heavy stuff with the hooks on my loader buckets in case I put too much load on the hydraulic cylinders.
The hook in the photos is the same one I have welded to all my back hoe buckets and has a two tonne rating. I like these hooks because the safety latch has the same rating as the hook so if the chain or strap moves and the load shifts to the latch you are still safe.
I also found the Kubota 4-in-1 bucket to be poorly designed in a couple of ways. First of all there were no covers to protect the side cylinders from spoil and/or small rocks hitting them when you drove into a pile of material. In addition, I found the back of the bucket to be too low. As you can see I had 1/4" think plate welded on to protect the cylinders and I welded a 6" wide piece of plate on the top edge of the bucket with a piece of schedule 80 pipe on top of that and some gussets behind for strength. This will protect the hoses and the nose of the
L45 much better than the Kubota design and also allow me to carry a little more material with each trip.
The photos are unpainted since I thought that would make it easier to see the changes. For those of you that might be concerned I can assure you that everything has now been painted Kubota orange

and hopefully tonight I can try the new bucket out!

Lauren
