New Kubota L45 has arrived

Nice tractor! I would have really liked a L45, but my budget forced me to go used and I was down between a JD 110 and the L48, which I like the 110 better. The L45's are really nice, though. I've never seen the air cleaner coming out of the hood of one, though, is that new or some sort of option?

Thanks guys. Here are a few action shots of the L45 with the 36" ditching bucket in action. This customer wanted to install a raised garden bed along a rock wall so I'm scraping off the sod and topsoil prior to putting some fill in.

Hi Martian

The ugly thing sticking up through the hood is what Kubota calls the "pre-cleaner" kit for the air intake. It creates a swirling vortex of air which separates out dust particles before the cleaner air heads down to the filter. In Canada it is about a $250 option and I agreed to it figuring anything that protects the engine and is that cheap is probably a good thing. However I did not realize they would cut a hole in my beautiful new hood and stick this rather unattractive "flying saucer" looking device on top but it is there now!

We have had a fair amount of rain in the last couple of weeks and our grouond is quite moist but despite that I have been surprised how much dust the pre-cleaner has picked up in the 20 hours I have put on the L45.

I was away last weekend and so I had the tires foamed. I just need the Laurin cab to arrive around the end of the month and then she'll be complete. Well actually after installing the cab I then need to take her to one final stop and have the A/C installed and THEN she'll be done!

Regards,

Lauren

Great pictures indeed! I had just never seen it before, so I was just wondering. Once you put the Laurin cab on I don't see any reason for you to ever leave the seat;)

Thanks for the kind words folks. I have 39 hours on her now and still loving it. I am getting used to the size I still have to get used to the fact that the rear tires hang out a little further than what I was used to with the B26. The other thing I have noticed is that the L45 does not turn as sharply as the B26 or the M59 I tested out. This is not surprising as the specs show that both the B26 and the M59 have a tighter turning circle than the L45. I can understand the B26 having a smaller turning circle, but why is the M59 tighter than an L45?

Anyway, here are a few more action shots of my getting and loading fill for the project in the previous photos and then a completed shot of the 80 foot long raised bed I put in.

Here are some shots of the first modifications I have made to the L45.

I am trying to avoid purchasing a float. I have a truck that can tow 14,000 pounds, a trailer that can take the weight and a Class A license to do it legally. However, a 14' trailer is a little short so I can't use the tube that goes through the loader arms to chain the front. I therefore decided to add a hook to the front bumper which can be used for tie down purposes as well as pulling if need be. I don't like to pull heavy stuff with the hooks on my loader buckets in case I put too much load on the hydraulic cylinders. The hook in the photos is the same one I have welded to all my back hoe buckets and has a two tonne rating. I like these hooks because the safety latch has the same rating as the hook so if the chain or strap moves and the load shifts to the latch you are still safe.

I also found the Kubota 4-in-1 bucket to be poorly designed in a couple of ways. First of all there were no covers to protect the side cylinders from spoil and/or small rocks hitting them when you drove into a pile of material. In addition, I found the back of the bucket to be too low. As you can see I had 1/4" think plate welded on to protect the cylinders and I welded a 6" wide piece of plate on the top edge of the bucket with a piece of schedule 80 pipe on top of that and some gussets behind for strength. This will protect the hoses and the nose of the L45 much better than the Kubota design and also allow me to carry a little more material with each trip.

The photos are unpainted since I thought that would make it easier to see the changes. For those of you that might be concerned I can assure you that everything has now been painted Kubota orange :D and hopefully tonight I can try the new bucket out! :)

Regards,

Lauren

Lauren,

Very nice L45 rig and your bucket mods look "factory" or should I say as it should have been built.

Your experiences with your B26 and 21 are evident in the way you equipped your L45 - you know what you needed/wanted in this machine.

The raised bed and rocks job look very nicely done.

Hello Lauren

Your changes to the L45 look great. Do you have any pictures of the hooks on the backhoe bucket(s)? I have a L39/L45 with 12, 18 and 24 qa buckets and think the addition of a hook would be great. Nice job on the front hook.

Mike
