I use my Nuvi instead of my smartphone, too (when in the car that has it). Illegal in California to hold a smartphone in your hand while driving, regardless of what you are doing with it. And the screen is just too small if it is mounted on the dash.
If we hit traffic (when my wife is along) she'll fire up Waze on her smartphone to see if it knows what the problem is.
I have had both the Garmin and my smartphone lead me on wild goose chases rather than taking me to my destination, so neither is perfect.
