I think you maybe happy that you have a fairly flat roof pitch laying like that in the last picture. You would not catch me up there like that. Everything looks great. Jon

Thanks. it's pretty flat, I can comfortably walk. But I really don't have a problem on 5:12 pitch roofs either though. At least I can set things down without them wanting to roll away.

Particularly at 2 stories up! Yikes! Heck of a fall....

That said, looking good structure!

I was on a 5:12 metal roof recently and the morning dew made it too dangerous to be up there. 4:12 never gives me any issues, but steeper then that and I need a rope or something to hold on to when my feet start to slide.

Last week a friend of mine was on his 2:12 pitch metal roof with a pole saw, trimming some branches that where leaning over his house. He set the saw down and it started to slide off, so he reached for it, and he slid off of the roof, landing on his feet, shattering one of his heals. He thinks that me might of stepped on some leaves, which caused him to lose traction, but he doesn't really know what happened.

Metal roofs have a way of surprising you.

That was painful to read Eddie.....

As you get older, you don't bounce as good.

I should have specified, shingle roofs are fine up to 5:12 for me. My father just got a metal roof on his garage and i had to go up there to adjust his weather station. I wasan't crazy about it, and it was a 4:12 roof. That's really the only metal roof i've been on though. Definitely glad he doesn't go up himself as it's 2 story and he's not the most stable on flat ground these days, let alone a roof.

A relative of my wife's was on his low-pitch metal pole barn roof and slipped. He fell 12' and broke his back. Fortunately, he lived, but is still feeling it's effects 5 years later.

Finished the roof and got the ice and water shield rolls up there. They were heavy. Passed all that plywood up, marked it, nailed it, added some scaffolding to the top so we could get up and down since it's not accessible from the second floor anymore.

And I'm exhausted.

Tomorrow is putting the ice and water shield down and start tyvek. Garage door guy is coming tomorrow finally, the last guy showed up empty handed. No paperwork, no books, no nothing. Told him what I wanted and he went off, and I never heard from him again.

Nice progress.

Do you have regular conversations with your neighbors? As in do they know what you are building? If not, I'll bet they are saying what the H is going on over there? :D

Looking good but I'm not climbing scaffolding or walk around with just boat shoes on!

My roofs are all metal, 3:12 and lower. Takes really special circumstances for me to get on if wet.

I have occasional talks with my neighbors. It痴 a friendly neighborhood. I think some may not have been able to envision the size of it when I told them though. And my boat shoes have great grip! Metal roof is on order, and I知 shopping for the steel siding now. This sucker should be finished sooner than I had planned.

My metal barn roof is 4/12, and slicker than snot. It was fine putting it on clean, with tennis shoes with a good grip. But once it got a little dust on it from the breeze, too slick. I have to wipe it off to walk on it.

Having it weather proofed is a big step. Still many, many hours of work inside until it's done. Has been quite a project and I appreciate riding along. :)

I'm with you. Our barn roof is also 4x12. When we were building it, we would walk out to the grass - dry grass, but there would still be enough moisture that got on your shoes they would be slick. We would actually get up on the ladder and change our shoes to dry ones.

We just put an addition onto the back or our garage. It's 4/12. Shingled. I felt perfectly comfortable on that. The existing garage is 5/12. The shingles are 40+ years old and deteriorating rapidly on the south facing side. I purchased enough shingles to re-do that to match the addition, but after taking a few steps onto it, I realize I'll need some fall protection. It's gonna wait until spring.

About the only thing I like about asphalt shingles is they ain't slippery unlike just about any other roofing material.

Would it be a good idea to install permanent tie-in points along the roof line?

I have 2 roofs at 8/12 pitch and one at 7/12 pitch. All shingled in the last 2 years. I would love tie points but I don't know how I would get up there to use them. I thought about trying to climb the roofs when they were being built and shingled, but chickened out. If I had to, I would lay a ladder against the roof and block the legs with a wheel of the tractor. But I hope to never have to get up there. Jon

I was thinking for a roof whose pitch is low enough that you could walk up and tie off so you'd be protected while working. Like for the OP whose roof is 2:12 but is way up in the air.
