New Fence Charger

My old Zareba solid state fence charger finally quit working. Got to be 10-12 years old. Had some earlier ones that seemed to work the way old automotive ignition systems worked, and had to send them away for reconditioning about every 6 months. Then the solid state (e.g. electronic) ones came out: much longer lasting. The old one used to click and even had a blinking light early one. The light quit working and finally the click. Checked with my DC voltage fence checker, and nothing showed. So, I knew it had gone bad.

Well, TSC no longer uses Zareba, something like Farm Land now, but looks the same except for the lack of Zareba name there: same 3 hole top mounting holes, etc. Well, I took it out of that plastic wrap. You know the kind: need a tool any more to get shed of it. I used big big snips to take off the top of the plastic and then popped it off. Then I proceeded to drop it on the concrete floor of my garage.

Put it in place: no clicker and no blinking light. Put the fence DC voltage checker on it and about bounced myself off the ground when it sparked all the LEDs in the checker. Hot stuff! But this is the only way of knowing whether it works without hearing or seeing the fence jump a spark to ground somewhere. Has a 1 year warranty. Will have to check it occasionally; I guess. Pisses me off. Had to stop working to take it back, because I know they'll connect it to a battery and test it, like they did a little one I bought that I thought wasn't working.

TSC had a special on the complete unit one with solar panel, built-in battery and all for 2 miles at only $90 vs. $100 I paid for this one (I already have a battery and solar panel plus battery tender to run it). Anyone buy the 2 miler and do a voltage check on it? This one does 5,000 volts: maximum on my checker. Need this for the hooved rats.

I would try and take it back tell them the light is broken and the clicker

For years & years I used an electric fence out here. Temporary fence until I could get the barbed wire repaired. The units were never very expensive - $35 to $40 - and would only last 3 to 4 years. They weren't all that powerful either - grab the wire and feel the jolt - its working.

The guy at the local feed & seed convinced me to buy the "new type" - the last one I bought. So - like I'd done a dozen time before - grab the wire and feel the jolt.

I think the "jolt" must have shot me six feet straight up in the air. This "new type" was one of those solid state types and when I reached down to feel the wire - I also kneeled down on my bare knee - just like Eddie in the picture right above.

To H#LL with that scene - I just forget the temporary electric fence and go out - right away - and do any necessary repairs.
