Hi guys, another west virginian here, anyways, this is not my first tractor, but my first sub compact, and my first kubota. I currently have a new holland tl80 and a massey 255:

anyways, two questions. One is break in. The manual says do not go full throttle for 50 hrs. The mechanic at the dealer i bought it from said run it wide open all the time, mowing, loading whatever. On everything else i have bought new i just broke the engine in at how i was gonna use it, doesn't necessarily mean wfo but it gets worked, whats your guys opinion.

2nd is i need a hitch. I have seen the receiver from bxpanded, and also the handy hitch i think its called on ebay that attaches to the 3 point, whats better. I like the looks of the handy hitch.

thanks
Charlie

I don't run mine wide open. I run it fast enough to do whatever I'm doing without slowing the engine broke in or not. I don't know that I've ever ran one wide open and if I did it would have been for a short period of time, I'm talking after break in for the wide open short times. I've never needed to run one wide open to mow or do fel work.
Somethings wrong. On my monitor you've turned that orange Kubota Red!:) Congrats on the purchase and you'll find it's a joy to operate. Don't know about hitches.

about what rpm is good to run the mower. I have been plowing snow, and i am with you, i just run it to where it feels good, like 2000-2500 works the loader quickly and has good speed.

is it ok to plow snow in high range, i am not talking large amounts of snow, but 6"'s or so.

Wide open on my BX was a touch over 3150-3250.

Frankly, you don't need to do that. You'll find a nice power band right around 2600 up to 2900. Use those rpm when you really need to power PTO stuff, but most likely, you will put equal number of hours at much lower rpm.

I also like to vary the rpm for first 20 hours, as much as possible, which is equally important. The BX is a over revved little monster anyhow, imho.:D:D

Oh sure!! You will absolutely plow snow in high range.

I have broken in two BX models and did so as per manual; think there are some old threads on this not too long ago.

I like to get my new tractors in the off mowing season so I can break it in with a FEL, but you can run a mower while breaking your engine in by running it at the recommended PTO speeds or just a little under and varying your RPM every once in a while.

Like many on here I rarely run WOT and only on the road for short distances. I run 2900 for my MMM and 3000 for rotary cutter, but it will cut well at lower RPM. With the exception of WOT on the road and varying RPM every once in a while, I don't operate my tractor too much difference after break in than before.

While using a FEL, I rev the engine up to dig and then drop the RPM back for transport and dumping; some keep it at the same RPM.

I'd say that mechanic is in a conflict of interest position. His advice is going to make business for himself fixing your messed up tractor. I'd report him to the dealership and Kubota. A proper break in is advised by the company. Stick with it.

thanks guys, yeah i have really enjoyed it so far, its a whole lot different than the big tractors, you have great visibility for working the loader. It plows absolutely plows the snow. My massey 255 wont touch this thing in the snow.

I have been varying the rpm, but i dont think it will have anywhere close to 50 hrs by mow season, so i guess it will see some of the higher rpms then.

so 2500-3000 is the sweet spot for mowing?

Dex, thanks for the welcome. I appreciate the help and info for barlows, i didnt my buy tractor there, but i had the dealer i went to price match, and actually beat them by a little bit to get my business.

I guess i will see Randy tomorrow, he is funny as ****.

pretty much ran mine all out after 20 hrs or so..The manual gets a little confusing on this..Supposed to mow WOT...I don't have a tach, so held back a little at first..Wouldn't worry about it too much.

I was easy on mine the first 10 hours or so and would mow using various speeds. Then shut it off and let it cool down to abient temp. Then go at it again. After that I mowed at almost full throttle, so as to get'er done. The long time and trusted salesman said not to worry about it. I did the 50 hour maintenace according to the manual. It seems like it uses a little oil to me...that is I add oil rather frequently in my opinon. I asked the salesman about that and he said, "I'd rather have and engine that used a little oil than one that didn't". Hum-m-m-m Purchased in April of 2009, it has 72 hrs on it now. Works great at grading, mowing and the FEL really came in handy in the big snows that we've had this season, as well as moving a lot of dirt and big rocks ( some bigger than the bucket).

I have to say when I bought mine they said to mow at full throttle also. I've tried various speeds and I think it mows best a full throttle. People, me included, have this thought that a slower RPM is some how saving the engine. They are designed to be used at that RPM for mowing and it won't hurt a thing. When I broke mine in I tried to keep the RPM's down a little bit and change the speed some. I have about 230 hours on mine and so far so good.

I am glad to help. Who did you buy from? I would guess State Equipment in Beckley. Randy said to bring 12 ga. shells tomorrow:eek::D. I figured you were the fellow he was talking about and asked him to look at the truck. I have had great service out of my BX and it has about 150 hours.

no, state was the highest, and really didn't want to work with me. Barlows gave me the best initial price, then i haggled with him, told him if i drove down, what would the bottom dollar take to get it off the lot.

I then went to parcs on rt 50 near clarksburg, with that price, and he threw in the woods blade, and a front brush guard, so i was happy.

I appreciate the help, i am already starting to fabricate some little things for it. I will be adding a bunch of drings to the bucket, as well as a ammo can on the rops, and some led lights.

Good deal I bought a grapple from Barlows this summer they are great people to deal with. I have never dealt with Parcs I will have to pay them a visit. State equipment in Cross lanes kind of acted like they didnt have time to fool with such a small purchase. I will say their parts guys are great to deal with though. There are a lot of mods on TBN that you can do. Are you going to weld chain hooks onto the bucket?

i will lay 2"x2" 1/4" wall receiver tubing all the way across the top of bucket, which lays in there nice, and gives me a good ridge to weld to, then weld 3 of these on:

46_235_large.jpg

i might throw a receiver adapter in the middle of the tube and make an extension that goes out 2-3 foot to grab hard to reach parts. This thing will be picking up alot of motors, and axles, so i need alot of attachment points.

I am hoping by putting the receiver stock on the top of the bucket the whole length it will distribute the load and not bend the bucket when lifting something heavy.

That is wise to strengthen the top of the bucket when you add the chain rings I would keep them in line with the FEL lift arms. The thought is that going outside of the arms may stress and possibly twist the bucket or the arms if the wrong person uses the tractor pulling with it. I like the receiver Idea I have seen it on here and it seems like a great Idea.
