New Aquiline Talon tire chains!

Every revolutionof the wheels works each side link against the links on either side of it. As there is no lubrication present a small amount of wear occurs and the chain gets longer as a result. It can amount to one or two links each winter depending on how many miles you dive the tractor with the chains on and how hard the road is. I had to cut two links off mine this fall to get a good fit. They were good and tight a year ago.

Well I've had it, Again, went in the woods this past weekend to haul out a couple logs, and on the second trip my Aquiline Talon tire chains broke, Again.
This time the side chain broke where that double hook thing-a-ma-jiggy goes, and that started banging on the fender in the tune of , Blanking chains, Blanking chains, Blinking Blanking chains. Luckily the side chain didn't completely brake, I got out the Vise Grips and crimp it back together and was able to get out of the woods. I'll have to wait for a warm day to fix it, 14 degrees is a little to cold for me to fix chains, now that I know Aquiline Talon tire chains are made in China, I wont buy another set, 90% of the stuff that I bought over the year's made in China just don't last.

If you like that style chain, the Norse Super Tractor chains are the same, but made in Norway.

Oldpath05, sounds like you need to bite the bullet and get yourself a set of Trygg chains. Your problems will be over, and then you can shine up your old chains and advertise them in Uncle Henry's Sell And Swap Guide. Some poor sucker will think he's getting a heck of a deal...

Union Farm Equipment only carry Talons tire chains, I cant seem to find (Norse Super Tractor chains), and one place I saw (Trygg) chains online wants $1,800.00 for 11.2-24 AG tire, lets all say ouch together, and made with 5/16 chain, that's the size I have now, and every time I sneeze, the chains brake. Tire Chains Required advertises (ForesTrac Tractor Studded Tire Chain) for $580.00, and supposedly there made in the USA and made with1/2 chain. I cant imagine my little tractor braking them. But TCR says those chains need 4" clearance, I have 3" clearance between tire and fenders, I never heard of tire chains needing 4", what have they, 4" studs, that don't make since. I do like the diamond shape pattern on them, maybe that stile of chain will stay on my tire straighter, as opposed to my Talon's, they are STILL all over the place, even after I put those fancy spring tensioners on, and that's another story with an unhappy ending.

The Norse chains are made by Tellefsdal, rebranded as Norse. Mine are 5/16 as well, no problems yet.

Sorry to hear about your luck with your Talons. The set I have on my 16.9-30's are workings great! I have them loose but not quite fist height and they work great. 1800 isn't to far off from the 1100 I think I have in mine. Was there any indication that the latch took a direct hit with something?

I think I forgot to note the 2 link v bars on the L3400 are on R-4's.

My new Aqualine MPC's made all the difference in the world this morning plowing snow.. I was even able to plow up my steepest hill, and it is one that you don't feel entirely comfortable walking down in dry weather. I have never been able to plow uphill before. We will see how they last!

The Talon chains I have cost around $500.00 to fit my tire, and I think the latch is the strongest part on my chains, so far I'm very disappointed in my set.

Mine seem stronger than a skunk on the center-line on an August afternoon.. if I remember right they were around $550 4 years ago.

Mine seem weaker than a one legged chicken trying to get to the other side of the road on a hot July morning in China, and they wont even stay on straight, when they stay together.

Mine def seem to walk a little bit out of synch but I have had no issues with them once I tightened them up one additional link. (I was turning on a hillside in deep mud and half walked the chain off the lugs.) R-1's just do not seem to like tire chains very much it seems. I have been running the talons for 2 months now with 0 issues. I have noticed that even my duo's are walking out of synch a little bit this year but I am trying to run them a little bit looser after taking suggestions from members on this forum. I was always tightening my chains down to near snare drum tightness and they seem to be working alot better a little bit looser as well as staying much much cleaner. I'm really curious why yours are giving you so much trouble though.

It could be as simple as a poor batch of chain, missed heat treating, etc. Mine don't show much wear at all, even on the spikes. They run on gravel mostly, but do see some road time on pavement.

In any case, the L3400 shouldn't have enough power to break them. Maybe something with 200 horsepower and duals, but not a lil old 35 horse compact tractor.

Thats what I'm wondering. I have been running the same 2 link v bar chain for quite a long time now and I never broke a chain. I have uncurled end links on the cross chains and I've had to re-hook the inside chain hook but thats it. If that L3400 is running R-1's that might change things a LITTLE bit. I'm still looking for something that makes sense. The talons I'm running now are Beefy. I have loaded rears with beet juice and a 1700lb concrete counter weight hanging off the back and they work great on the JD. That is atleast an order of magnitude more stress than that Bota is putting down.

Well, I have R1's on my tractor, doesn't seem to be any issue.

Thats why I'm still curious why OldPath is having so much trouble with his set? Maybe we aren't using our machines hard enough chilly?

I had mine since winter of (07-08), and from last year till now my chains have broke 6 times. I'm a weekend lumber jack, so the only reason I can think of why they keep breaking is global warming or it could be like how that old song goes, "if it weren't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all"

We buy chains from B and B chain. A division of chapel tractor. The grader and loader at the highway dept. go thru chains constantly. The cross chains are notched for quick replacement by twisting the j hooks. Don't know what chains and cross chains cost. The chain salesman comes around in a route truck. We also buy tow chains from him,I think they are a grade 70. plowking

I would call around to several of the tractor dealerships. When I got my Tellefsdal chains I got free shipping to the store because the salesman made trips once a week into the area. I was told the supplier was out of New Hampshire. Being pretty close I would expect that there has to be retailers in Maine or New Hampshire.
