New 2565 Major Problem!

Stick's and limb's are indeed a crafty sort and it's my opinion they were sent to see what they can destroy until rotted completely or burned at the stake (pun intended)..In forty plus years I have had them be quite forward in their intended harm. One came up from the bottom of the loader bracket, and tried to take me off the tractor like a skilled midevil jouster on horseback..Another snuck up quietly and took out the front grill ,radiator and fan...And yet another caused major damage to hydraulics and oil pan...Point being to the OP..You mentioned no shutdown,no flashing light etc..WHAT DID YOU WANT? RED oil light(RED...DANGER..Not flashing yellow..Check it when you want..That's why they call them Idiot light's) yet you fired it up and drove it the length of a football field? And it is a manufacturing filter placement problem? I sincerely hope your insurance will cover it,but on the other hand you posted your negligence on the internet so there is a "forever"record of it..Blaming the manufacturer would be like blaming Goodyear for putting their tire's on the road so they can pick up nail's..Hope the best for you...

Sorry to hear about this freak accident. The title of the post seemed to indicate a machine induced problem, but I think this one was environmental in my opinion.

Similar things have happened to me in the past. I was able to thread the needle and place a sturdy small branch clear through the radiator on my Max 25 a couple years back. I was backing out of some brush and it just snuck past every cross member, frame rail and fan blade. (Well almost made it past the fan blade...) That horrendous noise is what caused me to stop, and by then I could see the mess and coolant starting to flow like a stuck pig. That was a $700 lesson in not backing out of saplings that you just drove over...

Also, last year I had a rogue strand of barbed wire flip under my front tire, jump up and lasso the fuel filter assembly and proceed to rip it plumb off the side of the machine. That one was weird and caused me to scramble for a twig to plug the fuel line. Quick trick into town for temporary auto parts store repair and then $50 in parts later for the permanent fix. Sounds like your problem might be more intense.

Is it possible that there is a safety override keeping it from turning over since the oil pressure trigger might have popped a code in the computer? That's probably wishful thinking.

You're right. Dozer would be quicker and easier. I have a recently logged and partially timber mulched tract that is not quite ready for smooth mowing maintenance. Lots of 2-3ft long shards of logs and many random limbs still laying around.

In my case at least I'm just trying to poor boy the rest of the work. Spent enough big bucks already and if I'm patient, I should be able to get most of the rest with the tractor. Just picked up an EA landscape rake that should help pull those medium sized pieces of wood shrapnel into burn piles...

The oil filter is exposed from the bottom. The next tractor will have a skid plate installed before it ever goes in the field.

I'm going to check into that engine price. I know that to buy a tractor piece by piece costs many times more than a total tractor, but $26k does not anywhere near pass the smell test.

I'd think a short block or long block should be available. But if not, it is not that hard to pull an engine apart and rebuild it. If it seized, it will be a pretty major rebuild but that is what tractor mechanics do!

As I mentioned on your other thread, check into insurance.

MSRP on a complete short block is $5244.60 plus freight. That is complete with oil pan, front gears and cover, of course crank, pistons, etc. You would have to swap the head over and all accessories, fuel system and so forth. Still a ton of money, but it is $21k less than what you were quoted.

We sell some orchard tractors to farmers that do a lot of shredding (hundreds of acres) of prunings, so they run over the stuff first as the flail shredder is on the 3-point in the back. Even on these $75k+ tractors, we need to install belly pans if the guy intends to shred. There are fuel and brake lines, some wires, filters, and other delicate bits under most farm and utility tractors. Construction type rigs seem a lot better protected underneath.

Was this your first tractor? As kneedeep stated earlier "it is a tractor not a dozer". Filter placement claim won't cut it for a warranty fix. You must pay complete attention to everything going on while operateing the machine. Even while doing that bad things still happen. When the oil light comes on that means to "shutdown immediatly" and "DO NOT RE-START UNTIL THE PROBLEM IS LOCATED AND RESOLVED", even if it turns out to be something as simple as a bad sensor. Good luck with the repairs and I hope it has an inexpensive outcome.

I find some of the responses pretty bashing towards me. Let me be clear again. When the incident happened I was unaware. The oil was gone within seconds from the engine. Again I was unaware. If I saw the light on sooner I could have reacted faster. A blinking light or a buzzer would have been much better to detect. How many people spend the entire time staring at the dash when mowing? I glance back and forth. When I noticed the engine light on I shut it down. I got out of the tractor and looked around. I saw some oily residue but that was it. I saw a very light amount of leaking. Not much at all. I WAS IN TALL GRASS and couldn't see much. Based on this I thought something came lose and I wanted to find out what. I started it up and moved it no more than 5 to 10 feet from where I was to get it out of the grass and shut it down again. Then I was able to see what happened as I was out of the TALL GRASS. The time I drove the tractor from when the oil filter busted I had ZERO idea what happened as I was looking at what I was mowing. IT WAS NOT A FOOTBALL FIELD either it was about 50 yards when I realized the light was on. Let's be very clear. This is a new tractor and I have had several other tractors mowing the very same areas this one was mowing. Never an issue with the other tractors. John Deere and Kubota. This simply should not have happened. I have been hearing other stories of the same thing happening to other people with this type of tractor. I even asked about belly protection when I bought the tractor and was told there was nothing. I even inquired about having something built custom for it. They never got back to me on it. While I agree this was a bad deal I am blaming Mahindra for a exceptionally poor designed under belly that in the very least should have offered some type of protection. The filter is located in a place that will continue to see damage if the tractor is being used like a TRACTOR. I have been a very big Mahindra supporter and very happy with this tractor until this happened. I know and understand freak things can and do happen but because of the filter location this is something that will continue to happen to other people as there is nothing to prevent it from happening.

I agree brother, since the same thing happened to me. The position of the filter places it in the path of anything that the tractor drives over. There does need to be some form of protection and they need to add an oil pressure guage to the dash! Why there isn't one is beyond me. I'm going to add one to my tractor so I can keep a better eye on the health of my engine.

Take the comments with a grain of salt. The internet is not the best place to look for sympathy. I can empathize with your situation, however, in this case it sounds like its all on you. Prly not what you want to hear. Aint responsibility a bummer?

I do understand what you're saying. I'm not looking for sympathy though. The main thing to take away from my post is that this is a problem. A major problem with the tractor. This problem will not go away and it will happen more often as these tractors are used. A very simple solution of a belly pan would resolve the problem. At this point there is nothing to remedy the problem. This is something Mahindra should have addressed. It shouldn't be a consumer issue. Like I said things happen. If it was a one off I would be more understanding, but it's not.

A solution would be a remote oil filter kit and mount the filter wherever you want. Speed shops and such sell them ($50?) and I'll bet there is one with the right thread and filter size.

We occasionally fab up custom belly pans for our customers. Mostly for guys that shred prunings in orchards. They run over the prunings before they get to the 3-pt mounted mower/shredder. Mostly 1"-3" stuff, but they tend to reach out and damage the expensive parts somehow.

I do not have a 2565 on the lot to look at, but if the design of the tractor (or loader mounts) tends to funnel sticks into the filter area, I can see that as not such a good idea. It's usually not all that difficult to fab up some shields.

Nortrac, this could have happened to any of us. Us guys think we all are super operators and will catch a light on immediately, but the truth of the matter is otherwise. Running a tractor is often a good place to relax a little, listen to the radio, think about the day...and get tractor work done. For me with just 10 acres to mow and 20 acres of tractor therapy needed, I might have missed the light also. Starting it again without checking the stick is in hindsight a real issue though.

Totally agree. My pressure washer and 10 horsepower chipper both have you oil shutdowns. Not sure when the last time I started one of those and went in for a nap. Missing a warning light for about a minute doesn't make him evil just human. Not saying I would have restarted it but probably had little affected.

Op, you never said what it did when you tried to start it the second time. Did it spin or was it seized.

I had a snowblower loose a oil plug once. I smelt something wrong and shut I down. It was to late when it cooled and I fixed it, it was seized. I did get the manufacturer to replace it because it was a factory plug not designed to be removed. Even then it was more of a project than it was really worth for a 600 dollar motor. They made me work for it.

I reread your original post and I extend my humble apology..I obviously misread your post..I thought you stated that you shut it down after noticing the oil light ,and then fired her back up and drove 100 yards to clear the tall grass. I apologize.. I sincerely hope the best for you. That being said I have had several machines over the years of different colors and even a few with full front to back skid plates/belly pan if you prefer that have sustained damage.. As I said,downed hidden limbs are indeed a crafty sort.

Most automobile manufacturers now have automatic shut down if the oil level is too low. This feature has been on cars for some time. Makes you wonder why tractor manufacturers don't do the same. Perhaps some do? Seems to me that the expense is not that great. I would assume that that the number of engines seizing due to low oil is probably less than 1/10 of 1 percent. Perhaps that's why? I know that I have never had a low oil pressure light go off and if it did I would shut her down on the spot. My low priced generator has that shut down feature. Expense can't be the driver here.

In re-reading this thread, an earlier post says that vehicle makers now have low oil shutdown. I wasn't aware that this is now an automobile feature. Is this correct on most or all cars or just a few? Any more info on this?

You would think that would be a no brainer for Mahindra to incorporate an auto shut down if the oil dropped to low. When the filter on mine was hit with the stick, and honestly I assume a stick as there were some about but I didn't find one where the oil leaked out. It probably was mowed over. All the oil leaked out in seconds. When I noticed the light I immediately shut it down. When I was inspecting it in the tall grass it was hard to discern what happened. I could not get under the belly where it was at to look at it. I did see some oily residue and a very very light amount of drop leaking. Honestly I thought something just came lose. I had no idea there wasn't any oil left in it. I have had three leaks on the tractor before.....in the last few months. They were all related to a hose or a fitting. That is the main reason why I restarted it so I could move it to find the leak. It started with out issue and I simply moved it out of the grass and shut it down. The engine never died on me.

What has happened, happened. It's past tense now. While I agree in 20/20 hind sight starting back up wasn't the best idea. But honestly I really had no clue to that point and I could not investigate further where the tractor was at. I just got finished repairing a leak on it the previous week. Remember, this is basically a new tractor.

At this point, I want other people to be aware of this problem. It's not going to go away until Mahindra addresses it. When the dealership came to pick up my tractor they stated they just got another tractor like mine in with 60 something hours on it with the exact same issue.
