No, I didn't know that. Both the Mahindra dealer and another Oregon Kioti dealer who I have been in touch with said that if I pay cash, there is no question about sales tax.

Are they wrong?

Many Idaho residents living adjacent to Oregon cross the stateline daily to do their shopping/purchasing in Oregon specifically for that reason.

I think that since I am paying for the tractor when I take possession, it may be a moot point about paying sales tax here in Idaho. Idaho doesn't require the registration of compact tractors, so there is no official state instrument in place for collecting the tax.

Hope I'm not wrong here. You've got me a little curious about this. Guess I'll find out soon enough.

As a dealer that is right next to both Idaho and Oregon I get to deal with this every day. In both Idaho and Washington if you purchase a tractor or anything else in Oregon you are legally obligated to pay the sales tax to your state based on the purchase price. The selling dealer in Oregon is not legally required to tell you that, morally required maybe but not legally.

Idaho and Washington have a cooperative agreement with the state of Oregon to share sales information to fight this exact issue. No dealer audit is necessary. The state of Oregon discloses its information that dealers submit each month based on normal retailer B&O statements.

A couple of years ago the state of Washington ran a roundup on tax evaders in Washington who bought tractors in Oregon. Some received fines and other spent real time in jail. I talked with a prosecutor in Olympia who said most had only saved a few hundred dollars but with fines and lawyer fees would wind up paying thousands and have a felony tax evasion charge on their records.

At about the same time Washington state was arresting people who drove to Idaho to fill up with gas and arresting them as they came back into the state under the guise of tax evasion. At the time they were only losing maybe a $1 per car in tax revenue but were happy to throw a housewife on the pavement alongside the highway on channel 6 news live and arrest her in front of her crying children to prove their point.

The very thought of paying taxes makes my teeth itch. I have always felt far more responsible with my money than my state (especially Washington State) or my government. But if sales tax is the law in your state as long as you live there you should pay it and if it really bothers you start voting to get rid of it. The tax is there because you allow it to be there and for no other reason.

Find a legal exemption! It might not be too difficult. You could always buy used. I doubt anyone is going to report their sale as income thus reducing your chances of getting rounded up by the tax police.

The other thing that can possibly happen is a neighbor reports you with having a new tractor and before you know it the local tax people will stop by and say hello.

That would be my luck, move clear out in the country and end up with a "concerned" neighbor like that.

Well hey, I was wrong and I apologize for my naive comment. In my naivete, I made an assumption that was rather open to correction, and for that I am appreciative to you all for setting me straight.

Idaho does indeed require sales, or rather "use" tax on out-of-state purchases. In the case of Oregon (0% sales tax) purchases, it would be the full Idaho 6% state sales tax. In the case of a Washington (8% sales tax) purchase, there would be no additional Idaho sales tax, as the buyer had already exceeded the Idaho percentage or rate.

I found this information very easily on the internet.

I still think that the southwestern-Idaho dealers do business under a big disadvantage when considering Oregon purchasers. New Idaho tractors probably don't find many new homes in eastern Oregon.

Time for me to go outside where spring is already in the air. The birds have been singing at the break of dawn for the last two weeks now, but have only recently begun singing at dusk. I miss them during the cold winter months.

Now I know where I can come for some good advice/experience, so I'll likely be back as I get to know my tractor and it's capabilities.

We in NH are surrounded by states with sales tax. I wouldn't be suprised if some NH dealers are benefiting by selling to other New England states.
An interesting situation you can hope you guys out west don't find, the state of Maine was monitoring cars with Maine tags at the NH state liquor store in Portsmouth and pulling them over when they crossed back into Maine! Some states can be aggressive in pursuing what they feel is theirs!
I still doubt anything will come of your purchase, but now at least you know.

No 2525 for me. Sorry if that wasn't clear. I'm going for the 2615 TLB. I need the BH and it isn't available on the 2525.

The 2615 doesn't have a shuttle F/R, and I was commenting on the fact that the 2525 does and that if it mates to a BH, it may be the tractor for me. It is probably a nice tractor, with the shuttle and all, but I need the backhoe. I'll let you know how the 2615 works out w/o the shuttle though.

All for now. No more misunderstandings about sales tax. We've covered alot of ground with this thread. I'm better informed now, as I bet a few of you are also.
