New 1042, used actually

I just got a 2 year old 1042. I did a lot of research, it seems that a lot of problems get posted about these little mowers. I just wanted to add that mine runs and cuts great. I am very happy with it. It has 24 hours on it. I have the rest of the day off, so, I am going to piddle with it some. I will be brushing off a few rust spots on the deck, and painting them. I am thinking seriously about painting the deck with bed liner, the plastic stuff. What do you think about that?

The 1000's get more troubleshooting/problems posts simply because of the volume of them that are sold compared to the other models. Most 1000 owners are very happy with their little Cubs Looks nice, great price.

Use a rust conversion product after cleaning rusted areas. If you trap any rust under the liner material; it will rust under the liner mateil and go through to other side.

Yikes. What I found was that the paint was chipping off. the primer coat under the paint, is fine. I just rubbed the bad paint. I really don't know if I should or will, do anything with it. Best - Ted

I got my 1042 in the spring of last year, new. After I got it, I came on here and was horrified to see all the bad talking about the little cub! Mine has been absolutly great, no complaints at all.

I wouldn't sweat it. You know the drill. People tend not to speak up until they have problems. Out of the thousands of 1042's sold, some owners will have problems.

I have 75 hours on my 2004 1554, no issues at all.
I just change the oil, filters and grease all the zerk fittings on the machine, runs like a champ.
I did go to fully synthetic oil after the break in period on the engine, runs smooth.
