Morning dapper.
Sharp looking setup.
By chance did you fill the inside of the pipe...not sure if the pipe solid??... about half way w/cement etc.. for more stabilty.

Looks like something good to turn aroudn, take a step and crack your nuts on it!

...and that's one of the reason my vice now bolted to bench.

Morning all,
Thanks, I appreciate all the comments.
Like Mark7777, most things in my shop are on wheels, and can be moved out of the way to make open space in the shop. My shop is small, and there are a lot of varied projects that move thru it. I have a vice (or 2) on the bench, but it always seems to be to high, to close to wall, not where I need it, ect. I thought this one would be lower, and more accessible. The verdict is still out as to whether I will need to bolt it down or not. I did not fill the pipe, as then it would be so heavy that there would be no moving it. As it is, I can tip it and roll it to where needed. As for cracking nuts, It will only happen once before I learn to walk around it. ;)

I like it too. Seems like my one on the bench is usually too high when angle grinding something in it.

As far as tilting and rolling to move it, have you considered making an appendage that you clamp in the vise while rolling it, that appendage being an offset shaft that is coaxial with the base, just for something to hang on to?

Oh, and how about some brackets attached to the pipe to hold tools, air hoses, etc. instead of using the floor...

Sorry.

I like it a lot dapper - great idea. Your shop looks really nice! Too clean, but nice! :)

Very nice! I don't think you'll have to worry too much about it moving on you when you use it. Is the bottom plate large enough that you'll be standing on it while you work? The huevo's could be a problem around it, but what's a huevo compared to a nice piece of equipment. :)

I built a similar setup a long while ago (long gone so sory no photos were taken.) It was for the shop I worked at.

very similar only made using 2 sections of square tubing 1/4" wall 2 1/2" and 2" both were about 36" long. the 2" slid into the 2 1/2" I drilled holes into top corner of the 2-1/2" and welded in nuts 3/4" if I remember right 2 holes and 2 nuts and used 3" bolts with a small bar welded across the top of the bolts as set screws, the vice top was mounted to the 2" tubing and vice bolted to that. then the vice can have height adjustment from ~40" high up to 5' was very handy and eventually was sold when the shop was sold. I think it brought 150 bucks :D unpainted and well used...

anyhow got to gi fix a furnace...mark m

Forget the vise. I like the pay phone in your shop.

Very nice, the floor plate is big enough to add wt to if you need too. Yea to move it easer just clamp a 24 inc piece of pipe in it to pull it over and roll it around.

Thanks All.
Glad you like it. Saw it on a book cover, and thought it would work for my shop.
Jmc: I think your right about brackets for tools. I need to see which tools are going to “hang around” the vise on the floor first.
Dillo99: Shop not so clean, just good camera angle. :)
Kossetx: Yes I will be standing on plate when in use. LOL! Will be sure to keep my “rusty nuts” tightened up when in the vicinity.
Raddar, only one of MANY phones on that “phone pole” :) You might enjoy next photo.
Spiker, That’s what I like about this site. Someone always thinking of a way to make it work better. Pipe in Pipe for height adjustment…. Hummm! A bit late for this one, but could always use another… humm
