In all probability mechanics treat filter installations like they do tire changes. AKA tighter is better (and he will have to come to me for next change)
Many of those clowns never heard of torque wrenches.

I tried every trick in the book before i started cutting! I put that filter on @ the time of my last hydro service, so perhaps its shame on me for putting it on too tight? There was corrosion between the aluminum face of the filter and the block. I lubed the filter face and block with fluid film thiis time, perhaps this will help, i will let you know in 400 hours.

I was wondering if you forgot to lube the gasket on the filter the last time you serviced? This could have caused a tuff removal.

I'm late to the discussion but had the same issue with the "transmission filter" on a L48. There is no gasket - it is machined metal to machined metal contact. Hadn't seen that before.

Anyway, after hours of struggle the solution was to use one of those chain-type wrenches that are used on pipe.

The chain is wrapped around the pipe (filter) then snugged up and the last link secured to the handle. Then a Come-A-Long was attached to the axle and the the other end to the end of the wrench. A few ratchets of the Come-A-Long did the trick.

The face of the new filter was slathered in grease. Hope it works for the next filter change.
