Need Rubber?

Are rubber tires needed for the metal wheels on a 246 planter?

I have a 24B John Deere planter that looks about the same and it was made with the wheels just like your picture, I think rubber came along later.

Ours was just like that, no rubber needed.

If you look at the shape of the wheels they are designed to hill the dirt up over the seed.
