Need pecan tree advise

I have a large pecan tree near my back door which had a large limb broken off by a truck maybe 10 years ago. It still has been unable to cover over. While trying, it has created a hole that fills with water and stands, maybe 12" deep.

Also the crotch of the tree has 5 limbs at the same level and the center holds water here also.

I have read different places to fill the holes with cement or tar and other places say this will not stop the rotting.

I am interested in others experiences.

I'm sure the solution will involve Garrett Juice and grabbing hold of a dead chicken's legs and twirling him around and around while singing "Ode to Billy Joe".

Just kidding. Actually we try to go organic here as much as possible. Its only when actually want something to grow that we use synthetic materials. Oops just kidding again.

We REALLY do the organic thing as much as possible. Even feed our dogs Muenster Natural Dog Food.

That sounds like a pretty drastic case, I would say you have nothing to lose by trying to fill a hole that big/deep. Of course it's hindsight now, but the tree should have been pruned when it was young so it wouldn't have a crotch with 5 limbs, and again after the truck accident. Pecan trees need a lot of pruning to grow in a decent shape.

I am beginning to learn about this.

I think the trees were planted around 1940 and I bought the place in 1972, so the crotch was formed ahead of me.

The tree is probably 36" dia at the crotch & the limbs are up to about 12" dia. The tree is maybe 70 or 80' tall.

I'll admit, I havn't done anything for it and now am concerned I might lose it someday from my neglect.

I did paint the broken limb with prunning paint when it broke, but it doesn't last too long & I probably should have been repainting it every year.
