is this a good cold weather tractor? I live at 7300' Wyoming, I read a review somewhere that these are not good in cold weather as far as the shifter, new to tractors but I found a really good looking tractor with 1300hours $27k. any advice would be appreciated

Shifter?
You mean for starting in cold weather? Can it be retrofitted with a block heater? Most can. If you have an electrical source nearby, it should make starting much easier. There are other cold starting aids available, too.

this is what I read

John Deere 5210
Model Year: 2001

JD 5210 with front loader. Tractor has been good for my uses, bush hogging, land clearing, loading and unloading trailers. Some plowing and light farming.

Pros: Has plenty of power for the size.
Cons: When freezing temperatures hit it's useless. Shifter freezes and can't be moved.

OK, I thought maybe your computer self corrected “starter/starting” into “shifter”. (y)
Wonder if the complainer had got water into his transmission and it was freezing up?

ya thats what I was thinking,,, seems like it should be correctable, but we get -40 here and that is a problem, we have winter 7 months of the year here,

I have read that some of the 5 series JDs get water in the shifter boot which freezes and prevents shifting. Some have taken the plate off the bottom and drilled drainage holes to prevent it. Here's a link to some discussion about it:

frozen shifter
