Picked up an old Bush Hog finish mower, it is a 5' mower and appears to be fairly old. Needs the usual bearings, blades and a belt, but it also has a broken spindle housing. Need to identify the model so I can try to purchase a housing or come up with a way to fix the broken one which appears to have already been welded once

Dont know if this will help , but I have had different mowers over the years and a some of the housings were trailer wheel hubs where the lugs were bolted to the deck and spindle spun in it .

I think Bush Hog has lots of manuals on line. My only suggestion is to head over to the Bush Hog website and start looking through those manuals. You might get lucky and eventually find one.

The only other thing I can think of is to email Bush Hog some pics and ask for help identifying the model and part number you need. Most of those companies have some old timers working for them that have been there for years. There is a chance they could help.

Is there not an ID plate anywhere on the mower?

Tried emailing Bush Hog but still have not gotten a reply from them
I can still buy a housing assembly but pretty much gonna eat a grand!, mower just not worth it. Decided to build a new housing out of steel

Are you sure that's a Bush Hog brand mower?
Spindles look just like ones on my Pittsburg 220 mower. They were impossible to find.

When I get the spindle housing built I will post a picture of it. I did get the 2 good spindles rebuilt, new belt, new blades are ordered, wire wheeled the body and painted it, a bit different than it was a week ago

The spindle shown with the bent shaft and broken housing splits in half along the length to get the bearings and shaft out, That's what the bolt just under the pulley is for, holding the two halts together. I rebuilt 3 of these on my mower. They take standard 1" trailer bearings, bought them from Tractor Supply.

When I searched for a replacement I could not find one except through the dealer. It was about $100. Did you buy a new spindle?

Nice job on cleaning up the mower, looks good.

spindle was good, checked it on lathe and it was straight. Have a co-worker making a housing from some 2 1/2" stock, going to change it to ball bearings like the newer ones use. Tried to buy a housing but only available as an assembly which would cost about a grand canadian

Looks like my Bushhog TM-5 Serial # 1103003 it is obsolete. It looks like I can buy complete spindles for about 52 a piece.

I look to AgriSupply for parts replacement for my old equipment, you might give them a try. I also have a 1960s disc harrow by John Deere with wooden bearings, I use AgriSupply to replace parts the bearings are replaced by steel bearings

That looks like the one I have with a broken spindle.

Same exact one I have a TM5 and when the bearing went it destroyed the aluminum housing. At that time Messicks had a used one but they wanted $300 for it because they quit making them. Good luck trying to find one. I only paid $300 for the whole thing wasn't paying $300 for one spindle.

You know you just burst my bubble! I built an 8 foot bush hog back in the early 90's, had custom spindles made in the machine shop I worked at, and used 5 lug trailer hubs as bearings holders! I thought I had come up with something special!!
