I got this old planer from my neighbor. Sears 103.23220 but Sears no longer carry parts for it. This morning I took it partially apart, blades are dull but in good shape, there is some minor rust on the machine, but I think it is worth saving.

Here is one already rebuilt:

Any recommendation for blade sharpening?

Mornin czech,
I sharpen mine on the surface grinder at work ! ;) I made up a sharpening jig that holds the blades at the right angle, both joiner blades and planer knives. I believe that some of the larger tool houses sell a slow rpm wet wheel that are capable of sharpening those blades.

Another tip is to get yourself a hand held honing sharpener and some honing oil and you can touch up the blades while in the machine, you will get alot longer use out of the blades this way before resharpening.

Another tip is to use a dial indicator to set your blade height to your outfeed table and use a large sharpening stone to lap the blades to the exact height of the outfeed table !

Good Morning, Scotty,

Thats one thing I miss more and more - the tool factory I worked in. The guys there could sharpen anything, make anything.

Thanks for those ideas, I think I will find some pay for service to get those blades squared away, they are beyond touch up now.

Czech,
I might also suggest an extra set of blades, that way when the set in the machine dull up you can just install your extra set and be good to go ! ;)

I have the 6" version that has been in the family since it was new. Believe they did not come in the colors shown in the link!!! About a year back I found a site that had a large variety of new planar/jointer blades and found blades there to fit the 6" including carbide. I do not remember blades shorter than 6" but I would be willing to bet that the 4" and 6" have the same cross section.

A search should find blades using length, width, and thickness.

I found blades localy at Sears, they were 6" so i cut them down with a cut off wheel.

Adjusted and tuned the planer as well as I could - I wish I had access to meassuring stone table in a factory - and it works with reasonable tolerance.

Now the only problem is the motor. It has just a plain electrical motor with v belt and two pulleys and I could live with that, but the motor speed is too low to make a clean plane. My thickness planer runs 10 000 rpm, I would like this planer to be @ 5 000. Is it realistic? Not sure how much money I want to sink in just 4" planer when in the future I would like to get somehting much bigger.

"Specialization is for insects."

That is a good one. I will probably get the opportunity to use that within the next week or so.

Whoever Mr. Heinlein is or was, I would love to have had dinner with him.
