OK, new question. My All Purpose Ford Tractor manual indicates that the S-O-S differential requires 11 qts of fluid. I check the fluid at the inspection plug and it was full. I then drained the fluid, and it appeared to be about 2-ish gallons. I began refilling the fluid, and it started to weep out the inspection hole right at 8 qts.

That seemed odd. So I came inside and double checked my manual, yep 11 qts for the S-O-S, 8 for the 5 speed. I just assume that the plug was there for the 5 speed. So we added 3 more qts. But it my mind that seem a tad odd. Was doing some more checking and in my IT manual F-04 it says all S-O-S require 11 qts, except the RowCrop it requires just 8. What am I risking if I leave those 3 qts of fluid in the diff?

I just filled through the inspection plug on the side. Right at 11.5 qts in before it dribbled out. Didn't see any fill hole on top of the S-O-S..

Ahhh.. a 'save our souls' model. ;)

I don't have an SOS.

What do you risk with an over filled diff? leaky axle seals.

On row crops you also have drop boxes to fill on each side..

Roger that. The excess fluid will be drained tonight. I haven't moved the tractor since I added the fluid.

Soundguy,

You reference drop boxes, I have been searching the web and on the tractor, and have come to the conclusion that you were referring to the final drives on each side. I have tracked down that each take 1.5 qts of fluid, will the Universal Hydraulic/Transmission Fluid that I used in the differential be fine for these?

I assume in my pic that I've attached that the square plug is the inspection plug? Thanks for all the help.

fill thru the big sq plug till it starts to overfill and dribble out while you are filling.

the small square plug on the pan is the drain.

Finishing up some paint, and minor details. Have to troubleshoot the generator light, hard to tell which terminal is which on this old genny. Need to get the as much oil out of the steering gear box and add some lube in there to keep the gears lubricated. But just about ready to roll.
