After reading a lot on this forum and elsewhere, I finally decided on a JD 990 with four wheel drive to use to mow and blade the driveway and roadside on property my wife and I own in the badlands of western ND. I just took delivery yesterday, and thought I would attach a picture of my new "piece."

The other tractors I drove and considered (largely because the dealer had them in stock) were the 3320 and the 5103. I liked the 5103, but it was a little big for my garage and it was two wheel drive. I think the best way to describe the 990 vs the 3320 is that the 990 looks and feels like a small farm tractor, while the 3320 looks and feels more like a large garden tractor. The 990 is clearly much simpler than the 3320, but that's fine with me. I couldn't be happier with my choice.

I bought a used JD 513 5 foot brush cutter, and a new Woods RB 72 6 foot rear blade.

To answer a question I had in a previous post, the width of the 990 appears to be about 66 inches, certainly not the 79 inches stated in the brochure.

It is a beautiful, classic look! Nice property too. It looks like a whole lot of nobody around. Hard to find in my part of the world.

Great looking machine!!! One of Deere's best designs, IMHO...

Great looking country and that tractor really sets the panorama beautifully, too. You'll be well served with the 990. (That picture would make a great ad for Deere!)

Great looking tractor, great looking view. Used to spend a great deal of time in Eastern Mt, boy do I miss that area of the country.

Congratulations

I'll bet that's because of the rear wheel assembly. If you were to detach the outer rims from the inner "dish", and switch sides with them, the offset would space them considerably wider. Probably less than 13 inches, though. Still, if you have any serious slopes to navigate, it's something to consider.

Agreed about the pic; blow the dust off the mower deck, and you've got a brochure photo. The 90 series is one sharp machine; yours looks like my 790 took a big steroid pill.

I wanted to confirm that the 990 does not have the sync shift option, correct? I found a 04 990 4x4 with FEL (not sure of hrs on it yet) listed for 17,000. This is in Eastern NC, does that sound like reasonable price?

Cheers

That's right, beautiful picture.:) At least use it as a desktop on the computer screen.

bigtwinhog: In 04 in my area a 990 with FEL went new for $19,900 so your price isn't bad.
