MY KEY IS YOUR KEY?

Bump.

As a new owner I was a little shocked to see that "my key is your key"

I think I'll be installing a hidden switch that will not allow power to the fuel solenoid.

"One key fits all" and no titles means my tractory will either be under me or in the garage. Still amazes me that dealer has 10+ BX's sitting in the front of their lot and you can walk into the parts department and buy a key that will fit all of them. Even a lazy theif could figure this one out.

Same deal with the L2800/L3400. Surprised me too when I first found out.

Same for most all CUTS and heavy equipment that has a key. Kubota B series all have the same key although I am not sure about the B3030.
A bout the Same goes for cars and trucks-I've heard there are only around 10000 different keys.

Back 30-40 years ago every tractor pretty much took the same key, now each manufacturer or model has the same key.

Back in the day I left my doors unlocked in my house and my keys in the ignition in my unlocked car, sadly those days are gone.:(

A lot of the tractors that I operate have the same keys. Makes things much easier when you are jumping in and out of different tractors.

But the keys are left in the ignition most of the time anyway so it doesn't make very much difference anyway.

IMO, if someones is going to steal a tractor than they are not going to worry about how they are going ot start it. Rather they would be worrying about how they are going to transport it away. A lot of tractors can be started with a screwdriver.....

We also leave the keys in the landrover and in the quad. Someone could just jump in and drive away but they haven't yet... and I doubt it will in the future ;)

All my Kubota keys work in my 3 kubotas.
All my Bolens keys work in both of my Bolens tractors and the MTD I had.
Here's the odd one though :
My 2 Mazda car keys fit my back door.
I got rid of that car probably 15 years ago but kept 2 of the keys to use in my house back door.

When I was test driving Kubotas, the dealer said just to just use the same key. At first I thought WOW this guy went to the trouble to change all the ignition locks for his demo tractors to make it easy for the customer... then it hit me... DUH!

Old Farmall tractors didn't have any key, just a push/pull ignition switch, and a push to start switch IF you had a starter!

I ain't gonna read this whole thread, but there was a story floating around here a while back:

Guy opens his barn and lets his tractor warm-up while he drinks his coffee. After the caffeine kicks in, he realizes he started the machine with the key to his barn door. :D

If you own a tractor, chances are, your honest. Thats how I look at it. :)

That may be true, but, it's the guy that doesn't own a tractor I'd worry about.:)

I solved part of the key dilema by becoming a LoJack dealer.
Won't keep 'em from stealin' it, but shore will give 'em a big surprise when the Sheriff shows up!;)

Back in the early 60s me and my buddy would go around looking at cars at the used car lots.
Joe was always telling me to try my 50 Chevy car key in the cars ,
I kept telling him it wouldn't work in the used cars and I was rite till one day we were at a used car lot 55 miles from here in West Union Wva.
We were looking at a 1951 or 1952 Chevy Pick up.
Joe wanted to hear it run and said give me your car key.
He stuck it in the switch and fired that old pick up rite up with my car key.

:( Tell you thier has been a rash of Kubota being taken right off the dealers lots. One story I heard from the local dealer, they got in a BX 24 for service, noticed no it had all it's serial numbers removed. They called the cops, it was according to the owner purchased off E-Bay. Of course they took it and started an offical invesgation, now guess what happen the next night at that dealer? Someone broke in, and took a new BX 24 to replace the one the cops took!! Sad, now all the dealers, have fences, security lights, camera's. Guess you can place an order for a tractor with a gang here in Texas and have a nice shinney new tractor delivered in 24 hours:(

A key ignition only keeps kids and dumb thieves from stealing your tractor.

I can't remember the last time I heard of a car being stolen or a house being burglarized near my house. But I must admit: I park my 40K truck outside my garage so I have room to pull in my tractor :)

These posts almost make me nervous enough to pull the keys out of my cars and trucks at night and lock my doors when I go on vacation!
