My hack grill

Got to playing around with the 20lb propane tank that I cut for a test and made a small grill. Nothing fancy, just me piddling with the plasma and welder. The top is 300F but the handles are cool to the touch. I didn't expect that. I need to put a pipe on the exhaust, don't have anything suitable at the moment. If it hangs around, I will take a wire wheel to it and put a coat of grill paint on it.

Nice work! You might want to put a hinge on the back, so you can just tilt it up, insted of lifting it. What did you do to the bottom of it? I am kind of wanting to build a horizontal one, but I am not sure what I would have to do the bottom of it.

I cut a piece of expanded metal to hold the coals off the bottom and drilled three 1" holes for air. The exhaust hole on top is 2". No reason for those sizes, I was just guesstimating. I have a 30lb tank to make a horizontal one, but really want a 40. The 30 is just a little too short.

If I put a hinge on it and had the weight of the lid hanging off the back, I think it might tip over.

Just a quick update.... The handles do get a bit warm to the touch when you build a real fire in it. The steaks came out perfect... pink and juicy but no blood.

PS... I need to put some sheet metal under it. I kept the wood under that thing wet constantly to put out the cinders that fell out the bottom holes.

Allow me to give you a tip from experience about the bottom vent holes. Weld them closed and forget they were ever there.

Now drill a series of 1/4 holes in a line around the tank just below the expanded metal the charcoal is on. This will give even air flow to all the charcoal from the outer edges inward. When finished grilling close the top vent and any charcoal will go out to be used next time if the lid seals fairly well. And it will after the grill is used a few times.

My rectangle factory aluminum grill bottom vents have been closed for 30 years.

Nope, my wife bought a new office chair and it came with a foot rest attached to about 6" of center stem. I welded the stem to the bottom of the tank.

How did you cut the Tank in half? I want to make one

My wife has a small manual turn table she uses with her pottery. I put the tank on it, braced the plasma torch to be stable, and slowly turned the tank while the torch did it's work. It turned out better than expected.

Allow me to give you a tip from experience about the bottom vent holes. Weld them closed and forget they were ever there.

I may do just that. It will save a lot of hassle messing around with a sheet metal drip pan under it.

How are you gonna CLEAN without them holes??? I think at least just 1 to Clean... Sucks to just wait until everything is Cool down to Clean. Sometimes it's best to Clean it while it's HOT. Things come off easily when HOT, but that is my :2cents: ...
