Could you get by with an eight horsepower engine that had a smaller crankshaft and just get another pully to fit it?

Why don't you just repair that motor?

Harbor Freight has a chicom Honda knockoff with a 1" shaft. I see engines in their sale flyers all the time, so if you don't need it immediately you might save a few bucks.

Harbor Freight has an 11 HP w/ 1" shaft for $299, you can look online and print off a coupon good for 20% any one item, gets it down to $240.

And from what I've seen at the stores, they usually have them in stock and ready to go. If you go that route, I'd not get the extra warranty, if it lives through the warranty, it'll go on for years after that

While I try to buy American as much as possible and stay away from Chinese as much as possible, those kind of prices make it hard not to get one. My grandsons go-cart blew up and I couldn't find a Briggs, Tecumseh or small Kohler anywhere in stock. Got a 6.5 HP from Harbor Freight and thing has run perfectly for two years. They all have a fuel shutoff lever on them so you can run all the gas out of the carb when you're done, they've got low oil sensors, etc.
I have read that you need to flush the crankcase out before you use it just in case there's metal shavings left inside, but I read that after the grandsons had been running for a year.

Have you considered buy a diesel engine. This one is 10 HP with 1 shaft and electric start.

That diesel looks good, but made in China, just pointing out.
The Briggs Intek is a good engine, they start very well, but the tapered shaft makes it hard to mount a pulley and keep it in place and parallel to the genset pulley.

The other Intek looks real good, and since they're shipping from TN, shouldn't take long to get it in VA.

Most of the Inteks are made in the good old USA, Missouri, I believe and since they have OHV and a better carb setup than the older Briggs like you had on your generator, you'd have to like it.

Sounds like you've settled on the HF clone but if you are still looking, give a look at the Subaru Robins, their EX series. More spendy than most but a very good engine. OHC, crank is supported by ball bearing on BOTH ends. No int plastic parts like some of the small engines. The one I have has very little mechanical noise. Always starts on 1-2 pulls even after sitting all winter.
