we all got the signature yanmar mud/rust when we first started messing with out tractors, just not as much as it sounds like you got.

I bet the over heat and other differed maintenance items would be why they sold it. That and some people just have no idea where to get parts for them.

Probably right, I think I got a good one now!

Next thing - I have an opportunity to bush hog 2.5 acres for a guy and in return get 30 acres to hunt on this season. It's like chest high weeds/grass. I do not mind going slow and taking my time. I'm looking for a 4 ft bush hog on CL currently. What do I need to make sure I do not to break anything. Correct setup, height to run at, etc. Engine speed, PTO in the slowest speed obviously. Shaft length, etc. We're going to ride all over it first with four wheelers and walk it to make sure there is nothing bad we could end up hitting.

Also, do I engage the PTO at low RPM and then run the engine up? Or do I engage the PTO at running RPM?

I know I will need an ORC as well.

Make sure to keep the Radiator fins clean. Esp. if you don't have a Radiator screen. If you don't adding a Pump was a big plus.
I use a 4ft. BH. which what I like about it is it pretty much the same width as my rear wheels. That way I don't catch it on things. It also has a stump jumper which is a wedge under the BH. that is in front of the Blade and Drive shaft. Try and make sure you buy one that has it then if you hit a stump Etc. the BH. won't get caught on it.
Here a pic. of my old International BH. and it's a beast!! I use it to clean/clear trails and growth in the wooded land behind me;)

Man that is exactly what I need! Currently, all of the one's on CL are like $700+!! I know I can find a deal if I hold out a bit.

Good news, got to run the tractor for about 30 min today after cleaning all the crud out last night. It never got over 140 degrees idling at 1500 for 30 min!!!! I could not be happier! Water in radiator is still a little dirty, but it is clear again at least haha! I'll probably flush it a few more times before swapping it out with a 50/50 mix for good. I think we're now getting somewhere!

Yes engage the pto at like 800 rpm then run up. It will grind like crazy at operating speed:shocked: if you throw it in gear.

If you don't have the radiator screen do yourself a favor and get a small old windows screen and zip tie it to the grill to keep some seeds and fluff out of radiator.

The shaft length should be able to colapse as you lift it and not too long and bottom out.

If it's as tall as you say you might have to mow in the top low gear esp since you have a huge cutter. And if it's that tall I would shoot for shin height , the lower you cut the harder it is. I would call it 6 to 10" mowing height maybe?

Understood!

Another question, I have 4 speeds in both high and low.

Is it fine on the tractor (transmission/clutch) to use 1st gear in high instead of the equivalent (3rd or 4th??) gear in low when pulling a plow or doing any hard ground work?

Or is the low side more robust for tackling these things?

Or is it basically just ground speed vs RPM needs to be OK not to bog or lug and I'm safe?

Example - is 4th low faster than 1st high?
