The kind I get from Home Depot is already split, with tape that peels to uncover the adhesive that sticks to both sides of the canopy edge. I have to replace about once per year after shredding against some obstacle or other.

I think the foam is an excellent solution. Like you say cheap, effective and easy to install. I have just been too lazy to put more back on. The caulking sounds like a good idea. I also have the factory stuff come loose and so far I just tuck it back in place.
