My 425 fan failed!!

 / My 425 fan failed!! #81
On my 422 the switch is set at 120 deg F. An hour seems like more than enough time to turn on the fan. Is the thermal switch in good physical contact (not loose) with the block it is mounted to? Is it clean between these two services. I know that the fluid for the wheel circuits does not go through the hydraulic cooler. If you use the PTO the fan is more likely to come on. At this time of year it should come on. Try heating the switch in a pan of hot water while slowly raising the water temperature.

When I mounted the switch I was certain it did have good contact and firmly attached...I will keep an eye on it and if it continues not to work I will connect the two wires together and run it off the ignition........

" fluid for the wheel circuits does not go through the hydraulic cooler."

Thats interesting. I was doing some hard mini-hoe and loader work last week. The tank was getting pretty hot and wondered why the fan didn't come on. Maybe it would be better if the thermostat was attached to the tank.

So the PTO lines run through the cooler?
(I haven't used the PTO much, that's probably why the fan hasn't came on yet)
I tested my fan today with a hair-dryer and it came on. First time it has since I bought the tractor last month. I was suprised how much air it moved. I did put a 30 amp fuse in just for kicks.

 / My 425 fan failed!! #85
The thirty amp fuse will now be protected by the wire burning up if there is a short circuit. I have a 10 amp fuse and I don't believe that it has blown. The fuse holder wore out at 400+ hours. Go back to a 10 amp fuse. Replacing the wiring is not easy. Having the tractor catch on fire (which is the main thing a fuse prevents) would be even worse. I am not an expert in this area, but I do have a degree in electrical engineering, I wired my own house, and I have designed production electrical equipment, and consumer electronics devices, so I am not novice either.

O.K, I'll put old fuse in. (BTW, it was a 20amp fuse)

YIKES! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

As mentioned, if you let the smoke out of the wiring, it is hard to get it back in. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Trust me, as I have done that and wished I hadn't... (and I have two degrees in electronics and did it anyway. Call it "hands-on experimentation". I just wanted to personally test all those theories they were teaching us /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif).

O.k. All Set
I put the 20amp back in and tested the fan again. Works Great!

So I believe I have learned from this discussion the cooler is used for PTO operations and if one is not using the PTO then the fan would probably not be activated. Interesting.

 / My 425 fan failed!! #91
The fan also cools the steering and other cylinders hydraulic fluid, so some heat will be generated without the PTO, but the PTO is the big one.

The hydraulic oil gets very hot even when not using the PTO!!
Today after 7 hours of traveling with loads in the Grapple Bucket, I rinsed off my PT. Billows of steam rose from the hydraulic tank!! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

While doing some work with the minihoe yesterday with an 1845 the cooling fan for the hydraulic fluid came on. The PTO was not in use.

Yes. Mine comes on when doing heavy loader work. Almost as soon as it comes on when mowing... about 20 minutes into the job.

Well, Fourteen... all I can say is I did some dumb, dumb things in my youth, but was fortunate enough to survive to do dumb, dumb things in my middle age. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Granted, burning up the wiring in a vehicle is not as dumb as burning up my brain cells, but you'd think I'd learn by now. I think I am pre-disposed to experimentation. Thank goodness I believe the test results and don't try it again. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I can't remember who mentioned something about hitting your head on the canopy only once.... yeah, like I have practiced that a few times and even though I do it correctly, I still practice it just to make sure I'm bonking my skull correctly each time! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Buy a piece of gray 1/2" foam pipe insulation! Cut to length, slit open, slip over the bottom edges of the canopy! (Friction fit - no glue or fasteners required.) You will never swear again!!
