Hello to all! I ve been looking on here for awhile and finally signed up. I want to replace my old 3600 ford with a new MX5100 here in the next month. it will see a lot of time in the woods with my wallenstein fx90 skidding winch. I would like to make sure, however, that the la844 loader is stout enough for my tasks. How big of a log will it handle? Pics anyone?

if heavy lifting or curling is what you are after I thinkyou will be dissapointed.

I have a la844 on a L5740 and it is not the same loader as my old Davis loader on a MF35

Best advice is to figure out the weight you expect to move then try to test drive the machine you choose.

Mine has been tested for pressure and it comes back as fine but I find my loader hits the relief often particullary in the curl

That loader will lift just under 1700# in the bucket and I was under the impression that it was a well built loader.

Yep, you need to know the approximate weight of the logs.

A grapple bucket will help. It will get the load closer to the tractor and allow you to lift more than bucket forks too.

But the Loader on that tractor rated @ ~2400 @ pins is about the norm for 45-60HP tractors. Tractors in that size are usually between 2400 and 2700.

Even a M6040W/1153 loader is only good for ~2600lbs@ pins. And a kioti DK55 (which typically have strong loaders) is 2800 @ pins. And the really big Mahindra 5530 is only good for ~3000.

It takes a 75HP+ tractor to get over the 3000lb mark.

So I guess to answer you question "how big of a log will it handle", I'd say pretty close to the same as any other tractor under 60-65HP. If you need more capacity, you are going to have to step up to a MUCH larger tractor.

I guess the JD 5000e series are an anomaly here then.

We have a 5045e Deere at the farm and the loader is very impressive for a 45hp tractor. It lifts over 3100lbs at the pins to max height, and over 4000lbs at the pins to 5' height. Also has a lift height of 122".

This may be an option for the OP if loader performance is a primary concern. The 5045e is priced about the same as the MX4700/5100, but is only available with the sync-shuttle transmission, no HST. With that said, from what I have seen I do really like the Mx Kubotas. Having a hydrostatic transmission on this size machine would be a very nice feature.

The spec I saw on that....553 loader...JohnDeere 553 Loader Utility Loaders Material Handling Equipment JohnDeere.com

was only 2917lbs @ pins.

Deere muddys the water a bit (and others are starting to do it as well) giving a spec @ 59" lift. And yes it is much higher. 1000lbs higher to be exact. But that doesnt mean the deere will out-lift another tractor rated @ only 2900 to max height, because they ALL will lift more to a lower height. The loader travels in an arc. And the higher you go, the steeper the angle gets on the cylinder. Thus reducing its capacity. Kubota doesnt publish the "59" capacity" but just guessing based on the ones that do, the kubota is probabally capable of ~3300lb lift @ the 59" mark.

So I guess what I am saying is....when comparing loaders...BE EXTRA SURE you are comparing apples to apples. IE: Pins @ max height to pins @ max height. Dont try comparing pins @ 59" to Bucket center @ max height. This will give you false comparison.

Also, Kubota does rate the loader lift capacity at 1500mm lift height (59") in addition to the full height spec. With that said, Kubota doesn't as readily post this info as Deere does. Some Kubota models they post this in the spec sheets, others you have to look in the owners manual. For example, they post the 1500mm specs for the L4600, L3800/3200, but I haven't seen it in the specs for the Grand L's or the Mx4700/5100.

Not trying to argue with you, just giving the OP another option.

Thanks to everyone who has replied. ive compared the mx5100 to every tractor in its class. yes, the 5045e does have probably one of the stouter loaders out there but i dont like the tranny. Ive looked and carefully compared loader specs until my head is spinning. A 2000# log is pretty normal for me and ive drug out much bigger than that. I dont need to be able to pick up EVERY log but i want to be able to pick up most of them. I was just hoping someone had some real world experience with one of these tractors in the woods because i know specs on paper dont mean everything. If i do decide the mx is to small i really like the m5640 too but its quite a bit more money.

I don't know if you said you did or not, but have you looked at Kioti or Mahindra.. both lines have some very strong loaders in tractors that would be at or under the price of the MX. DK40se with KL401 is at 2760 lbs at the pins and a hydro model is maybe $22500 (prices vary by region). And some of those Mahindra models are in that price range and have very strong loaders also. maybe that 5035 with the ML130 loader about 2700 lbs full height at the pins. That is one mean angry looking tractor:eek:.Not trying to talk you out of a 'bota, but just an idea.

I too like the specs and looks of the Mahindra 5035. Im just too nervous about parts availibility in the future and the only dealer in my area hasnt sold Mahindras much more than a year i think. Heck for stout looking tractor though and still in the back of my mind. Im still hoping one of you mx5100 owners on here can give me some feedback:)

AH, you are correct. I was looking at the 5095M, 5D, and 5E limited series for my numbers.

I wonder why the regular ole' 5E is higher than the rest:confused2:

I have a mx5100 and have to say is has impresses me! Add ballast to the rear and it is great I have done a lot of clearing with this tractor . It performed great I allso bale hay with it. Before the back tires were loaded I was a little concerned but after I am very pleased moved some very big logs with it. I run a Vermeer 6040 cutter 8ft a ten wheel rake and a Vermeer 504n silage round baler very happy with the combo

sounds like you use your MX like i will when i get it! That makes me more certain itll do what i want. It sure seems like the perfect size for snaking through the woods i work in. I skid out some good sized(24"+dbh) red oak and white oak blow down. My old ford 531(industrial 3600) can drag em pretty good but i need four wheel drive and a loader badly.

I have tried to abuse it and use it! Lol it has done every thing I needed and more offset the back tires out one setting and load the tires and you should be happy another good thing is the kubota ins 250 deductible and no questions asked! I let a tree fall over it in the woods. Fell across and over the hood did 3300.00 in damage paid my 250.00 had it back in a week new hood and all ! A freind of mine bought a manhandra comparable size he was dragging a log and the tractor broke in half right in front of the seat and fell to the ground ! So far I have had no problems with the mx5100 and I would say I push it harder then most people push a tractor the new 5140 kubota is a heavier tractor with more bells and whistles around 5 grand more . But again I have pushed trees over cleared land hauled trees move and load round bales . I have added the three rear remotes , great add wish I would have done it earlier. I love the shuttle transmission it makes FEL work easy and quick. If I can answer any thing for you feel free to ask I will tell ya bad or good !
