Must remove the hitch?

Yup, most of mine have a swinger...

Went to get my truck inspected yesterday and apparently its the "law" here in Nova Scotia to pull the hitch!

Guy doing the inspection said that its a $2xx.00 fine

Came home and looked online but could not find a specific MV statute about unused hitches but there is a section under MV inspections and protruding devices like hitches. So its likely not the police who will fine you, but DOT Compliance. I cant see it applying to consumer vehicles unless you did something really stupid and DOT really wanted to have a talk to you, but commercial guys could very well be hit by this.

The section if anyone wants a source is:
http://www.novascotia.ca/just/regulations/regs/mvstdsve.htm said:
Section 200 of the Motor Vehicle Act subpart 22a which states:
22 (a) Every bumper, door, mudguard, fender, hood or other body component including every device thereon shall be securely attached to a vehicle, and not worn, torn, damaged or protruding to an extent likely to cause injury.

Glad I'm not a subject in that empire...

I came out of a Dollar store today and saw a parked police van with a hitch platform sticking out about 16" x 36" wide from his hitch. I didn't see anyone run into that even though there weren't any cones around it.

Police seem to be exempt from following the laws.... I often see them with their cell phone to their ear (illegal here, hands free devices only) as they pass by going well over the speed limit with no lights flashing... guess having a hitch or other rear bumper object is ok for them, right?

I think the inspector was stretching the application of section 200 a little too far. I read that to be more for loose chrome or flopping fenders.

That was my first take on it too...

But then, there was a dimension stated, 16" maybe? Ill see if I can find the one I saw

Yeah but the police are handling business on their phone:rolleyes: I had a woman cop almost hit me at a gas station one day, she was on her phone. She waved at me and went on her way. They also don't have to stop at stop signs.

I couldnt find the page I previously found.. But did come across this discussion Trailer Hitches | NSJC Message Board : As I said, it seems to be more of an Inspection or compliance issue as opposed to a MV issue.

"We were talking about it at coffee the other morning, two RCMP's came in and we asked them, they knew nothing about it.
One the the guys I was sitting with had a compliance officer come into his shop later that day, and he asked him.
The compliance officer said "it was most certainly illegal".

One of the guys here at work was told the same thing yesterday as he was putting gas in his truck......with the hitch on it.

I've searched it on the NS web site, but can't find anything."

"I have asked before too ,rcmp said it's fine ,compliance said illegal .

left hand doesn't know the right one. "
