mulit power

Hey guys im new to the forum and to owning a 68 135 deluxe with the continental gas engine with 2200 original hours. I have just found this place when i was looking for an answer to the multi power. I was bush hogging a week ago and the everything was working good and i noticed that the tractor seemed to start going slower. I was making a turn and shifted the mp to low and the tractor didnt slow down but it was working fine earlier. I also noticed the same thing when i was plowing. It seems to quiet working when it has been running for about an hour and has a chance to heat up. Does anyone have any thoughts. Thanks

If you were going down hill when you shifted to low multil-power while mowing the tractor may not slow down or maybe even go faster if the slope is steep enough. Multi-power Massys will free wheel in low multi-power. The owners manual advises to shift into high multi-power when decending steep inclines because of this feature. In low multi-power the power to the rear axles run through an over-running clutch and will not allow for engine braking. In high multi-power the drive line is locked and thus keep the tractor from free wheeling. You mentioned the tractor started slowing down in high multi-power, did it continue to slow down in low multi-power. If this is the case it sounds like slippage in the main two stage clutch. Another member, Shona13 has more knowledge on multi-power and is helping me diagnose my problems, hopefully he will respond to this thread.

Thanks for the response. The mp was working fine for the first hour of use then it was basically stuck in mp low and wouldnt shift from h to l or l to h just stuck in l. Is this because the clutch system is going out or because it simply needs a fluid change. I am hoping that is all it is but am confused as to why it only happens after it has been running for a while

Shona13 is from down under so it may take a day for him to respond. Mine is stuck in low all the time and won't shift to high. He has asked if I was running the correct fluid also. I'm beginning to wonder how sensitive the multi-power system is to fluid level. I have single acting cylinders on my FEL. They have been leaking and am running on the lower end of the trans-hydraulic dipstick. If I raise the loader will the oil level drop enough to affect the multi-power function?? Your problems are giving me ideas about mine and hopefully we will both solve our issues. I know the fluid I have used in the past to top off the trans-hydraulic fluid meets the Massey standard but cannot say for sure if all the fluid in the system is correct. I know if changing the fluid would solve the problem, that old fluid would be gone in a heartbeat. The cost of the oil is far cheaper and easier than a teardowm.

Alright guys not sure if the 135 is the same as the 175 but on the 175 there is a filter under or behind the front grill.Follow the lines to the front of the tractor and you should find a cooler as well as the filter Its a washable screen that can be cleaned.The main filter is inside the trans [only way to remove and clean is to have the tractor apart] absolutely silly.One other thing if its in high and the clutches aren't slipping then your clutches are probably OK.Mine would slip in MP high I had to replace clutches in the clutch pac.Your saying that your's won't shift out of low.so in another words your not getting any engine braking.Did you check the pinch bolt on the linkage rod to make sure that its not slipping when you putting it into high.It should be just above the bell housing where the rod goes into the top of the bell housing you can move the mp lever from high to low and see if its also moving the one that goes into the bell housing or if its slipping.The rod that goes into the bell housing moves a control valve.It's kinda strange that you loose mp after a hour of it working .As for the oil level causing loss of MP I kinda doubt that as the main pump and aux pump are in the bottom of the trans .Unless your saying that the oil doesn't even show on the stick??? check your linkage first and make sure everything is working.Let me know what happens.Larry

Thanks for the response. The linkages are good and working. Everytime I start the tractor and run it the mp works fine shifting from h to l and vice versa with no slippage. Its only after working for an hour or so that it gets stuck in low. When this has happened the lever is still in high and but the tractor automatically goes into low and stays there. The fluid level is fine. I was thinking that it may not be the right fluid or that it is breaking down when it gets hot. Thoughts? Thanks for the help. Nathan

One thing I can say is that when mine started acting up it would do something like what yours is doing.Eventually it wouldn't work at all.It ended up being that the clutches started to deteriorate and lose there friction material.I had to split the tractor remove the multipower clutch pack and take it apart and replace the friction discs.I guess being a 44 yr old tractor the material breaks down.I had the disc's relined at a trans repair shop in winnipeg and put it all back together and its been working good since then. There's really not much to go wrong other then the aux hyd pump failing,the filter being plugged or the control valve not working or the linkage slipping.I suspect its the disc's breaking down.Larry.
