Daughter e-mailed me this picture of a visitor to her new house and asked me what type of snake it is. I guessed it was a Rat snake, but really have no idea for sure. Anybody have a clue?

Best part was that she said her "hunter-Killer" English Bulldog was standing beside it and didn't have a clue it was there. Never did sense the snake. ;)

Looks like a "corn snake" to me. No, they don't eat corn, they eat rodents. Scales are smooth and shiny. They are generally found in the south-eastern United States. They make great pets and are human tolerant once domesticated.

That one looks like a friendly to me.
Should help keep pressure on the mouse population.

I'm with Bart on this one because the picture is too fuzzy to tell for sure. Doug, tell your daughter it's harmless and she should pick it up. If it bites her, it's a rat snake and if it doesn't it's probably a corn snake.;)

Thanks Jinman, I'll have her try that. She said it didn't try to go anywhere and seemed docile. Carole used her telephone to shoot several pixs. They just moved into a new home that has alot of open fields for now until other homes get built. She was more curious about what type it was than concerned about it.

I think it scared my granddaughter (she's 8) more because she and the bulldog didn't see it when they were standing on the sidewalk beside it. She jumped when she finally saw it, but the Biff never did figure it out. Cynthia (the grand daughter), is not afraid to check things out, so it was more the surprise than the snake.
