Mowing Fence Mow

agree, for me a heavy duty bicycle handle/harness weed eater works wonders around my endless pond dams & areas like yours.
i am by no means a fan of glyphosate and feel it's the lazy man's way out. plus hate the look of a sprayed fence line...then again, i don't make my living that way. regards,
I hear that. If string isn't enough I'll get a saw blade or one of them chain heads and get after it.

My experience with one of the chain heads is it will zip through small saplings or wire. Once you get to a certain size of say 2 or 3 inches, the blade doesn't cut through the entire trunk and can propel itself away from it. IMO, one really needs handlebars to keep control of it. Plus eye protection because it throws more debris.

It really does the job on briars and honeysuckle. But be extra careful with it.

A long rake tooth sticking straight out from the bottom of the mower might work to "peel" off the long blades of fescue that always grow over the bottom barb wire.

Sounds like a lot of work to mow under the fence BEFORE you take the fence down. Why not just take the fence down and then mow?

The grass is as high as the fence so I was just trying to make it more convenient to get in there and work. I'll post pictures when I go back out there.

It was just an idea, I have lots of them but don't usually share :)

A heavy duty weedeater with handle bars will handle the heavy grass. I have a 250 Stihl brushcutter with the handlebars that I put a .105" string string head on. I can cut about 20 ft per minute or more of 2ft tall grass under a HT fence. I have a 1.3 mile section of electric fence that I have done that on to get it prepped for using glyphosphate. The only downside is you need to do this before the day gets hot or late in the evening, and that unit will take the better part of a gallon of gas to cut. W Jones

Got it brush hugged down, used the BX with 4 footer... I mowed on both sides of the fence and it worked well. I just stepped on what grass was left before i cut the clips. Going back tomorrow to roll up the wire.

agree, the FS 250 is a beast that will rip through about anything. it's heavy, but the the harness makes it very well balanced & can usually do all the dams easily in one session.
loop handles are ok, 95% landscapers use them over the bicycle handles but is too restricting & uncomfortable for me.

Not sure how to describe this, but my goal is to cut some of the very tall grass growing under a barb wire fence that I will be taking out. I like the idea of a bar that would stick out approximately 6 inches past the brush hog at an angle to grab grass under the fence and draw it into the brush hog cutting area.... if it was spring loaded it would hit the t-post and go right back each time. I am about to test a stationary version and will post results.

I don't have to cut every blade to the ground, if I can cut most of the grass it will help tremendously

I haven't read all the responses yet, but I'm curious. Why don't you just spray it then burn it off if you need to?

Same..I have the Stihl FS-130R and it is an absolute beast! When I cleared my fence lines of privet Hedges and whatnot I put a blade on it and it just did a fantastic job. The trimmer head will lay down grass up to your chin tall.

I have one and a half miles of barbed wire fence around my 80 acres. Only about 300 feet next to a meadow I mow. So..... with my JD X570 riding mower - I got up real close to the barbed wire.

All was going well. Then the second wire up stated dragging across my lower leg. Got my attention - REAL QUICK. I was watching the cut - not the barbed wire.

Now about twice a year - me and my big 'ol Stihl weed whacker.
