Sad week. Neighbor was mowing and his mower picked up a piece of wire throwing it against his temple. It penetrated his head and he died several days later. He was able to put the tractor out of gear before going unconscious.

It is unknown at this time if the mower had any chains or other deflectors.

Sheesh :(

How can that even happen?

That's a terrible shame. I had good size chunk of wood from a tree branch ricochet off of a tree trunk and whiz past my ear while shredding at the edge of the woods. All it takes is a nearly vertical surface and everything to line up just so ...

Sad.
Thinking about prevention, in my situation, I have:
chains on shredder
cab to deflect missiles
HST transmission stops tractor when foot off pedal

What a trajedy... It is just amazing what can be turned into a projectile when hit by a mower blade...
Not to make light of such a horrible thing, but I always wear safety glasses now when mowing... you just never know.... Years ago when mowing with my old Bolens 1050, I was going around a tree on the right side of the mower (no deflector on that old deck), when I saw a big old toad hop away around the tree and out of sight. Wouldn't you know it, that crazy toad came around the far side of the tree trunk when I got there and hopped right into the throat of the mower deck. About a half cup full of minced toad ricoched off the tree trunk and right up into my face. I guess I was just lucky it wasn't something hard.
