I got problems
the frame is NOT box... it is U shaped. I couldn't tell before because the sheet metal covering it.
Now that I got the sub frame off and I can see under the sheet metal
some places there is a 1/4" thick top plate welded on
and in other places there is a diagonal plate inside the u but not all in the same places
and in some places the u frame is doubled up
here is a drawing I got pics comming later when I get my cell phone back.
frame.jpg
please someone tell me what to do??
is this some sort of unified frame/body???
wtf
I think my hauler dreams just went out in the friggin garbage!!!

Nothing wrong with a C Channel frame. Most trucks use this type frame.
I have a 49 Chevy 1 1/2 Ton that has C Channel frame. It was originally a fire tanker truck. That C Channel frame hauled a 1000 gallon water tank on it. It was a cab n chassis when I bought it. I had a 10'6" x 8' flatbed built for it and I installed 2 x 10 hemlock deck. Made the rear bumper with trailer hitch also. I thought about mounting a goose neck hitch but I don't have a GN trailer anymore and the truck spends more time going to car shows than hauling anyway.

no, this is NOT a c channel frame.
this is not a box frame.
It is a U as in the letter U shaped frame!
It is a unibody
that means I cant haul **** with it.
I could haul a lawn mower trailer and that is about the max...
project over
not even worth pulling the engine or tranny out of it.
I am calling the scap guy tomorrow to come get it!!!

SAW - "GAME OVER"
I lose..

How about some better pictures of the frame you're talking about?

Steve,
from the pics you posted (attached) where the spring perches are mounted on 1 pic and the frame on each side of the spare tire in the second sure look like a C channel frame to me.

Sounds like he found some fish plates from where it was stretched.

We need more pics. You can't be this high strung getting into a project like this. You've gotta roll with what you uncover.

yeah I am rolling with it... rolling with it right to the scrap yard.
the whole frame is u channel except the very front frame suspention area is boxed and it is bolted on..
I should have crawled under it before I started.
just not worth bothering with

I don't know why you are scrapping this project? The frame you have was heavy enough to support a rv and all it's supporting equipment, why would it not be heavy enough to haul what you want with it? I am assuming the flat bed you would have fabricated would have strengthened the vehicle even more.

Your frame is just like a C-channel turned up and enclosed on top. It's essentially a boxed tube, should be strong enough. It was strong enough to require a dually axle in the rear.

Does it run right now? Like can it be driven if there was lights on the back and licensed?

Why can't you weld a plate overthe top of the U channel to make it a box?
Maybe some photos like George 2615 sent. Photos from the rear. That we can enlarge once we click on them.

hugs, Brandi

Which is possibly as strong or stronger than the regular C channel.

Don't scrap that thing. I'll pay whatever they'll give you for it so I can use the driveline.

get a hair cut and get a real job! *chuckling* had to say it. *been there done that* both receiving and sending end of it.

i think you are giving up to easily. and just need a swift kick in the rear. and get back at it.

if ya got the skills / know how. then get back at it. if ya lacking in some knowledge learn it. and work your way through it.

easier words said than done. but we all been there.

i also understand being completely over whelmed. take a step back and finish the clean up. dealing with stuff that is should not be burned, other stuff that came out of the unit. get some sort of tarp over cab. and finish off with rest of the rear end. tear what is left off. grinding / cutting etc.. to clean things up.

take a box (square) tube say 3" square tube 3/16 to 1/4 inch,, and weld over the U tube frame and use for the beginning of your bed, use fish plates or a flat if there is gaps and weld along the frame where needed,

if that frame is going to throw you for a loop how in the world could you mount a pickup cab on it?

Or use the "doner" pick up (where your getting the cab) and use its frame and weld them together,

your giving up on the simple part of it,

He never got to the part where he has to stop and figure things out. I hope he gets over it and goes on with the build. Ed

Ahhhh come on ... I read thru this with great anticipation only to find you QUIT Geez man.

There is no way that a C30 doesn't have a frame strong enough for this project. I would not give up for that reason.

I have built a few truck beds as I got irritated with the utilty bodies offered by suppliers such as Koenig and Knapheide. Not very good for small parts and organization, so I built my own. You can do this.

If it was "running" and on Craigslist I think it would get more than a few calls, that could pay for the work already done.

?but it is a 1990 6.0L 366 tbi big block V8 1 ton dually chassis with less that 30k miles! So...

I gotta admit when I see dilapidated RVs I think of the value of the undercarriage, and what a waste it is. I like the idea but personally wouldn't devote that much time to it, don't really need the rig and I bet he doesn't either. That's a big job.

I am pulling the whole drive train and I am going to buy another 1 ton box frame pickup cab & chassis from the junk yard w/ title.
I am keeping the 350 engine, tranny, drive shaft, axle, wheels, computer, gauge cluster, and wiring.
I will make a new thread when I have something to show.
