Kioti DK50SE HST w/FEL, Gravely 60" ZTR Mower. Stihl MS290 (selling), CS261, & FS190 + Echo CS400 & 2010 F-350 6.4 PSD snowplow truck
In the beginning I had a drainage problem. One of my ponds is a beaver pond with 12 month creek flowing in and out that the prior owner expanded with a backhoe. The other is a runoff and spring fed creek that overflows every Winter & Spring. INt he past this created a "vast dismal swamp" that would be unmowable for months. Last June I got my LX266 almost stuck in that bog trying to mow a month or more too early.

Unfortunately I do not seem to have a pic of true "before" swampy condition. :confused3:

I envisioned digging a small decorative "dry creekbed" to act as a drain and to make the yard cuter. My wife agreed to this project (she is 100% in charge of the "yard" the rest is my domain).

This spring was unnaturally dry and the swamp dried out very early. On day in April I heard we had 4-5 days of rain coming so I went out and dug the trench. This was my first real "bucket work". :D

The first 2 pictures are of that day. It is also documented in "Today's Seat Time" around April 21.

The drainage worked! I got runoff from the landlocked pond (we call it the Cherrio Pond) to the Beaver Pond and Voila! No more swamp!

But it was not cute.

Jumping ahead to Father's day weekend. Other projects had consumed me since late April, but for Father's Day, except for going to Richmond for celevbrations with family, and Church, all weekend was ME TIME!

First I made a crossing for the Lawn Mower. That is pic 3. The very large rock had been decorating a man-made pond next to the driveway that was ridiculous, hard to see and leaked killing half the fish. I've been tearing it out to make my wife a garden... I've got all the rocks around that old pond, and a couple rock piles, and a ton of bricks of various eras.

I used the bricks first to make a channel for water under the lawn mower bridge, and to support the big stone. and then I filled in the rest like building a giant puzzle. The cossing is very close to level and as smooth as I can make it.

Pic 4 is where I used a scrap 7' chunk of iron water pipe and rocks to make a crossing for my Kioti. I used all the discussions on my "tractor road" thread to build this what basically is a culvert/crossing.

I put bricks in the bottom to ensure the rocks did not completely close off the flow of water, and to conserve my rocks. I need to measure this thing, but trust me it is a LOT of rocks...

Pic 5 is a wide shot trying to capture the whole "creekebed". You can also see the bricks in the bottom of the bed.

That is what I managed to get done Saturday 6/17/12. I did work on placing rocks for about 4-5 hours on Sunday the 18th but did not get any pix.

Be well,
David

Yesterday, I got back to work on this project.

My main method of moving rocks has been the LX266 with the TSC Dump Trailer. It has a 1400 lb capacity, and I believe I've used it. I used the Kioti & Grapple for the really big rocks. I did also use a hand truck for 4 medium large rocks where I could not easily get the tractor onto the side slope, and they were too big for me to lift into the trailer. That was HARD...

The Pic attached is my Rock Wagon with a full load of rocks.

Be well,

David

Here are the pics I shot last evening. I think I got 3 more trailers full of rocks placed after these pics...

Pic 1 is the "headwater" at the Cheerio Pond

The rest of the pics are an attempt at going downstream taking pics to show the details.

Don't even try to count the rocks... I didn't either...

Be well,
David

This post should add pics to the end of the creekbed at the Beaver Pond...

Pic 4 is the end of the creek, Pics 2 & 3 show detail of the tractor road crossing area.

There were about 3-4 more trailers of rocks added before dinner time last night, so these are not final pics...

The last pic is an attempt from up the hill closer to the house to capture the whole shot in a wider view...

Be well,
David

David,
Neat project. Looks good.

One observation that I would make, however, is:
You have WAY too much time on your hands!

Wow David, that is a lot of work,.. Looks good,.. Have you tested it with a big rain to see how well it still works.? We have not had enough rain here to even talk about since Easter . We are in extreme drought now. I showed your pix to the wife, and she commented how nice it looked. My back is starting to hurt now looking at all those rocks..:) Take care David

That does look great. The concept of rocks does not compute on my property. The only way to get them is to go buy them. :) Now if you'd like some Grade A REALLY large Gopher Turtles to screw up your place, I can ship you a half dozen or so...

ForgeBlast,

No big rain since I started last weekend... and the pond is about a foot lower than the headwater!

I hope it holds!

I am sure it will hold, I am just thinking that after a rain driving over the rocks may push them into the mud and some settling will occur.
We did something similar (we needed to control run off of water down a slope) except we put in the 4'' per pipe, and covered it in gravel and then
the first idea was to do exactly what you did with the stone, but then i ended up having a lot of extra stone and so I built a wall over it and put a planting bed in front of it. Its held up over 100 year flood events.

David, that's a great job! I like the way you worked the tractor into as many shots as possible, too! :D
Placing stones that big exactly where you want them can be a task, looks like you got!

David,

Project is looking good. I might be wrong, but blueriver may have been referring to the tractors as "girls".

I was in your area this past Saturday, was out on the bike for a few hours.

Happy tractoring!!

Mike,

I rode for the first time since surgery a week or so ago. I think I'm ready to ride further, like to work and back now... Hand still has issues, but will work the clutch...
