I didn,t want to hijack lostinthewoods thread , so since some of You seem to know your trees quite well I thought I,d ask for advice here .

the first 3 pics is a ver large olk elm tree i think. that has 100,s of what look like tumors of sorts . I,m guessing the entire tree needs to be removed but I,m curious as to what could cause this .

4th pic is a large tree , not sure of type , Nor what caused this problem , its within 10 foot of the house & half of it overhangs the house . Is this something I should be concerned with ?

the last 2 pics are another one 20 foot from the second but also close & overhangs the house . I had just noticed this damage after seeing the other post. Any ideas of what would cause it or dangers .

The house is surounded by these as well as 6 huge walnut trees that also aren,t in the best shape & I really dont want to loose any of them if I dont have to . I was told some of them are over 100 years old & most are 3 to 4 foot across torwards the bottom 4 foot or so . The original part of our house was built around the 1880,s . Thanks in advance for any suggestions . Bob

Number 1,2,3, are burls. Sometimes it痴 very desired by wood workers.

Number 4 looks like lightning damage or a burn pile that was not far enough from the tree.

Thanks sunspot for the info , I had never heard of burls , but just googled it . Very interesting & not as bad as I thought . The lightning strike also sounds likelly on the other one . I hated the thought of cutting any of them down. thanks again . Bob
