More 1500 woes.

Thanks again for helping a guy out with his new tractor. Just when I think I'm getting it all figured out something else comes up. My latest post was to try and find out what kind of fluid the transmission took and if it needed any. I bought a gallon of the recomended transmission/hydraulic fluid from the local JD outlet today. I also found the dip stick just behind the fill hole! It showed that I had plenty of fluid. Now I am concerned. After depressing the clutch pedal I often can't get the thing into gear. I then have to let the pedal out some for it to go into gear. Is this normal? The clutch pedal has about 3/4 of an inch free play at the top (which someone recommended). What I am wondering is, if getting it into gear should be this tricky? The clutch play seems fine and works most of the time but often it needs a little extra fiddling to coax it into gear. Please tell me this is normal and that I just need to learn how to shift a Yanmar tractor. I don't want to replace a clutch just now.

The clutch & transmission are fine. The transmission is not a synchromesh transmission, so if the gears aren't exactly in line they have to move a little to engage.

My main problem is that I have my neighbors JD to compare it to. The JD will grind if I don't let the motor speed slow down enough before shifting but it never refuses to go into gear. The Yanmar sort of freezes up like there wasn't even a gear there. Then I let the clutch out a tad and it goes right in. Is that normal? Doesn't do it all the time.

My 1500 D does the same thing. Sometimes it goes right into gear and other times I have let the clutch out and fiddle with it to get it in gear. Just the nature of the beast.

It is normal; the gears have to spin a bit to line up. If they are grinding even with the clutch in that is a different problem. The best thing you could do is stop driving and looking at your neighbors JD. It is like buying a used ford sedan and driving your neighbors Mercedes. The only thing that really matters is if you tractor can do the job you need and you can afford it. Enjoy your purchase and if it doesn’t do what you need to do sell it and buy the Yannie that will. I have the same problem. My neighbor has a Boomer and I use it (when it runs) from time to time and the experience can play with your head. But I realize with the price difference I can send my kid to college, and the better job he has the better nursing home I get to live in. /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif
