MMM PTO disconnect

I'm getting ready to remove my MMM from my BX. I've read through the owners manual and it looks easy. The only thing I am not clear on is disconnecting the PTO shaft. If I pull the coupling back, does the mower shaft get shorter by telescoping or do I have to push the mower towards the front of tractor to disengage the shafts ?

and you need to grease it before you use it again, to make sure it keeps telescoping!!!!
