I have an early 70s MTE2000D. The gears will not shift. If I start it in neutral, I cannot shift into gear. If I start it in gear with the clutch pedal depressed it pulls as though the clutch is pedal is not depressed, and I cannot shift gears. I have to shut off the engine in order to stop moving. Any ideas?

How difficult is it to depress the clutch? You should have about an inch of pedal before you start to feel the resistance of the clutch activating. If you have too much free play the clutch won't do its job. Check any linkages to see if something has slipped or become disconnected. If it's not simple the only recourse may be to split the tractor to gain access. That's a last resort.

your clutch disc is stuck to the flywheel. I do not know enough about that model to recommend a solution, but a lot of new tractors have a catch to allow storing the tractor with the clutch depressed to avoid this issue. you may need to spray some release agent (wd40, pb blaster etc) on it and bumping it to free it.

Yep. Either the clutch pedal mechanism isn't working or the clutch disk is rusted stuck to the flywheel. Probably the latter. It is a common problem when a tractor sits for a few years without the clutch depressed.

Work it gently for awhilem, drive it around and use it best as you can & sometimes the clutch will come free and begin to work. But if not it it will need to be taken apart and the clutch manually separated. If the tractor runs and works well otherwise it is worth fixing.

Splitting a tractor to fix a clutch sounds more intimidating than it actually is. It turns out to be mostly some supports plus a lot of connections and nuts and bolts. Do it with someone who has done it before if you can. A couple of evenings will get it apart and back together. Be SURE to shim the front axle so the engine doesn't flp to the side when it slides apart.
Good luck,

As mentioned earlier check linkage first and also check adjustment. It is usually that the clutch material has rusted onto the flywheel. You can try to release it by moving the tractor to an open place where you have lots of room. With the tractor off, put it in 2nd or 3rd gear low range. Start the tractor in gear and while depressing the clutch briefly stomp on the brake and release it again and repeat, all while depressing the clutch pedal. This will usually remedy the problem. Sometimes you might have to start in a higher gear to enact more force on the clutch and flywheel. Be sure that if this does not work the first time that you leave yourself enough room to safely shut down the tractor before hitting something or driving off a cliff..

You can also try using a ground engaging implement like a plough to do a similar thing by starting in gear and lowering the implement into the ground and depressing the clutch.

Hope this helps!!

put something on the 3pt box blade etc. pick a spot with nothing around to get in the way, start it in as high a gear as you can with the clutch pedal depressed then drop the box blade to engage the ground with the pedal still depressed that should load up the clutch plate and break it free. point is to put load on it with the clutch pedal depressed.

I've unstock clutches running a mower on the back. I've also unstuck them by running them & hitting the brakes, but the problem withthat method you can also break something in the transmission.
