Milwaukee 12v tools question

I have several Milwaukee 12v tools with the small squarish shaped batteries. They work fine, but I wondered if the newer flat 3 a/h lithium batteries fit and are ok to use with the older 12v tools?
Want to get more run time and get a 12v automobile charger, too.

Battery types have some limits as to which chargers suit them best, and makers usually sort them for us by fit to the tool. Many NiCad chargers will work for NiMh too, but lithiums are their own thing as a rule and just won't fit if not suited. Accessory suppliers offer higher amp/hr replacements for many brands/voltages. The NiCads you likely don't have are the worst for service/charge life. Too few understand that they should be stored at 1/4 or less charge or they "die young" (internal resistance, etc). NiMh and lithium aren't so fussy and are in a whole 'nother league.

I've had tools given to me because "batteries aren't available anymore". Heh, the guys had only checked the Milwaukee or whatever factory web sites. (18v NiMhs weren't that pricey and I got in cheap.) Google-up by brand & voltage the guys who have what you want. Check many for gen info/interchangeablity to get a perspective and choose by the amp/hr you prefer from those who price 'em your way. btw: +1 on the lighter, handier 12v tools vs heavy 18v and up. Any more power needed than they provide will have me running a cord.

the V12 milwaukee tools are not compatible with the M12 Lithium Ion series, but milwaukee used to and might still make, a V12 Lithium battery, it took a special charger. just looked and couldn't find the 12 volt version still found the 18 and 28 volt versions so you might keep looking.
