Military trailer turned into a dump trailer?

I'm a little late to the game here, but I like the concept of that "Hydraulicless dump". I admit that it's nowhere near the usefulness of a $6K dump trailer, but for those of us just needing to dump a little something every now and then, it's a great idea. If it were purpose built with an electric brake axle, a guy could pull pins in the front and then dump by using the wammy bar on a brake controller. That way he could pull away from the dump pile and then re-dump to empty the trailer without getting out of the cab.

I like it.

That's what I do now.....mine is homemade ('bout $500 in materials).....no hydraulics, just bull strength and ignorance to dump...(.although hydraulics would be cool....)

Hey guys new person here just lurking but couldnt help but sign up to let you know about my dump trailer.I converted an m105 to dump a few years ago I will try to post pictures later.I started by cutting off the complete heavy tongue then building a new one out of 4" channel that went below the old frame and all the way back to the front of the leaf spring hanger and swiveled so the trailer doesnt dump as much as swivel on the axle.A TSC cylinder mounted in the front straight up and a 12 volt hydraulic up/down pump. The trailer doesnt dump 90 and the rear drags at full dump so Im planning a little reengeneering on of these days. Its pretty heavy but I pull it with a 3/4 ton and my tractor I havent been on the road with a load yet but I've pulled it all over the farm with loads of gravel and it seems to do great.
Trailer $400
pump $450
cylinder $125
misc steel and wood sideboards $ ?

Also wanted to include the M105 has air over hydraulic brakes and I havent figgered out what I want to do with em yet.I did find that lots of larger equipment trailers are electric over hydraulic but the little pump thingy is crazy expensive at the trailer store

You have done what I keep running through my head. The M105 is alot of trailer and cheaper than the M101/102. But I think I am going to wind up with a 101/102. Probably a 102 because it has the surge brakes.

Putting some numbers together by the time I built up a 105 to a full dump
Trailer $400
Hydraulics $500
8000k brake axle $500
New wheels and tires $300
add in some metal for the frame and my time and I can buy a new single axle dump trailer for $2100.

I think I can fine a M102 for $500 to $600 and modify the hinge from the cast to a metal bracket with a him joint. Then maybe mount an electric jack to the front of the box and the A frame to make it dump for $300. That would get me a very usable 1/2 dumping trailer for under $1000.

But I need to find some trailers to look at first. I have not actually seen one in person yet.

Check mine out in my sign below for an example of a non-hydraulic dump. I haven't been able to max out what I could dump.

Thanx for the link Gearhead....I really like the high-lift jack

Hope you don't mind if I steal the idea...;)

Wonder if anyone ever converted the M1101/02 (hummed trailer) to a dump type?

It looks like you did a nice job converting it to dump. For anyone who runs across this thread down the road, unless you have reworked the way it hinges, a stock M101 IS NOT INTENDED TO DUMP See M101 Dump Bed - Page 2 for someone who tried and ripped apart the back hinges on his second dumping attempt...

I cut 17" off the back of the oem frame and box it. Also I add a 3" c channel frame .basically I build a whole new sub frame..8' x 45 1/2" and add my new hinge points just behind the spring shackle and there is a bushing 1/2" plate as a hinge I've built 5 trailers 4 were sold and never had one come back broken.....all sold on e-bay

As I said, you did it right and didn't just use the hinge points that were intended to fold the tongue for transport to dump it.

Figured I'd post up in an old thread instead of starting a new one. I have a M101A3 and one of my many reasons for getting it was for the dump feature around the farm. After doing some more homework before I started taking things apart I discovered all the concerns for the pivot bolts, brackets, and getting everything lined up to pin back together. Well I decided to see for myself and sure enough it's a pain in the butt. My dad and I played around with it in the driveway not hooked to the truck and found the biggest issue was getting things lined back up after separating the front pin brackets.

Yesterday I went to get a few loads of cotton hull compost for the garden and figured that this was a good time to try out the best way to dump this thing without having to use the pin pull method. I have a little Yanmar 2210 tractor with a boom pole and I used it to get the hitch off the truck and was thinking I was just going to pitch the nose in the air and let the *** end set on the ground, thus dumping the load. Well, it's not that easy. When I did finally get the nose up and the *** down it still required lots of pitchfork time to get the load out due to the angle. It may work for things like firewood and such but things like damp, intertwined loads of mulch/compost don't want to slide out near as easily. I think part of this is because the ribs and wheel wells on the side walls. I took the tailgate off to do this so it wouldn't get damaged.

I had considered using the hi-lift method, fabricating mounts for a long ram jack (like on a engine hoist), and the method I tried above. The problem that I have with each of these options is that in the end the angle of the bed isn't steep enough to get a full dump, it's not high enough of the ground to get a full dump, and you can still be left with a pain to get it back together again...

So I've thrown my first hand experience out there to post in this thread and say I think the best option I've seen so far is the dump beds that a guy a few posts up was selling on ebay. It changes the geometry of the bed to give you a complete dump and takes the stress off the components that weren't intended for that in the first place. It would take some fabrication to do if you didn't buy it that way but it seems like the best option to me if you intend to do any regular dumping.

The dry run experiment...

Those are not dump trailers and were not intended to dump or pivot on the rear of the tongue. The "hinged tongue" is hinged in the middle, not the rear of the tongue, so the tongue can stand upright for tighter packing when shipped.

If you examine the rear bolts of the tongue, they are not in line with each other but are at an angle. When you dump the trailer, you are bending the rear of the tongue or the mounting brackets.
