I looked at one 1440 (used) at the Hopkinton NH fair that Northwood Power had. It looked pretty bruised and we could not agree on $$$. I have a contact with a private sale with a 1440 hydro. we are closer in price. what are your opinion of this tractor?? Basically I want to add a backhoe to my implement collection.

Thx in advance.

Jim

Mornin Jim,
Ive heard good things about the 1440. Other than your statement that you want to use it with a backhoe your not too specific. It will easily handle a backhoe. Its a 40 hp machine with 32 at the pto, using a Iseki diesel 91.4 cu in with turbo. The machine weights in at just over 3000 lbs without a FEL. The hydro is three ranges from 0-13.5 mph. Im sure there are others on this forum that have direct contact with this tractor that can give you more specific info. Good luck in your hunt !

Scott... I looked at that link and can't tell, but are you sure it is pushing 32hp at the PTO? The hydro has less PTO HP then the gear transmissions of the same model, I think it is something like 1 1/2 hp less on a hydro.

Mornin Steve,
I have the series 1400 sales catologue. According to the data I have its 31.7 hp with a hydro and 32.4 with a standard trans.

Thanks for that... I'll have to find my 1533/1540 book I thought I seen 1 1/2 Hp difference in that for gear/hydro, but again we are talking 1400 and 1500. Or I could have just misread and it was only 1/2hp difference.

EDIT... Yes in the book for the 1533/1540 the Hydro has 2.5hp less then the gear at the PTO... So I guess the 1400/1500 are different in that case, but I wonder why.

Thanks guys for your responses. I looked at the tractor at the fair and also I had a private sale going on. Both 1440's had backhoes which I am looking for. The 1440 at the fair was beat and faded for its age. The private sale also had a backhoe and he wanted to step done to a smaller tractor. I have a 1428V with 100hrs, garage kept. Suddenly when we started to get serious he said his was worth more than what he was asking for it so our $$$$ were off by about $4000.

I guess I will keep my 1428v and rent professional size equipment when I need it. It just means allotting a whole day for a task versus spending an hour or two at the time.

Once again, thx for your replies.

Craigslist is like crack for me :)
