Has anyone been charged an international assessment fee for ordering online from metals supermarket?

My bank said they have an international address so that's why I was charged. My bank places the charge

Not sure if it is the same company, but there used to be a 'metal supermarket' out here a few years ago. No "international" charges ever.... even if ordered online and picked up in store.

But, they sold out to another company.... which may be why there is now another charge.

Banker here. If you paid with a card and they had to do a currency conversion, then you likely got charged 1%. That's not from your bank, that from the card company (visa or mastercard). If it's something other than that, I might be able to add more details.

I ordered a vent from an RV store in Kentucky and got charged an international fee. I asked about that and was told other people complained as well, but it had something to do with the banks address.

I would be upset paying a foreign fee at a brick and mortar local business. That’s their cost.

Tried to do business with the new Metals Supermarket in Knoxville TN several times without success. Some DOM tubing wasn’t in stock but could get it but never called back, twice. Ordered online metals and got delivered in two days. For new structural HR steel they price 6’ for what I can get 20’ stick at Triple S few miles closer. Drops, SS, and aluminum common and much cheaper at scrapyard. They had a little high carbon steel which is harder to get individual without being a business. Plenty of on-line sources.

Enjoy reading their news letter and have learned about different metals, applications and alloys.

Yeah, same here. Online Metals has always been high. I deal with Alamo Iron Works up in the big city. You have to buy full lengths, but they'll cut it in half if you ask. It's usually free but some stuff has a small charge. I bought an 8" I-Beam for my overhead gantry, and they gas cut that for free. I still have the other half. :cautious:

It's just so far away and the place I used to rent trailers and equipment from closed down. I don't do enough to buy a trailer anymore. Although I'm thinking of building another FEL--This time for the Ford and need 2x6 box and more.

All the money goes to the same pocket from these Subsidiaries: Alamo Iron Works, Intsel Steel, R&S Steel Supply, Nexcoil Steel, General Steel, Maas-Hansen Steel, Metals, Inc., Arbor Metals, Shamrock Steel, Triple-S Steel and Triple-S Tube Supply.

I did use a visa debit card
I ordered online but chose to pick it up at the store
I have had issues trying to order from the knoxville tn store as well

Sounds like the charge has happened to others . Guess we all have to check payment bank address when ordering online
