Wife was nagging me today, when she saw one of the used ones I was gonna go look at. "Just buy a new one, the last thing you need is another project to piddle on"

Dont know thats what im going to do yet, going to atleast see what's at the two auctions next week. Id a whole lot rather spend $750 or $1000 on a good quality used, then a new, light duty.

I think of it this way, I Can get a new medium/heavy standard duty, and thats it; Or, I can get a new Honda outboard for the job boat, and a Used bush hog.

Don't pass up the wife's approval to buy a new one, lol.

If you plan to keep and use it long term just buy a new one and don't skimp on it. I use mine about 2-3 times a year around the family's farm. Not sure about acreage as its a mix of clearings and trails but it's about a six hour job with the 5' hog. I have a Titan which is now IronCraft. It has taken some abuse and is holding up really well. In the whole scheme of things a 5'-6' medium duty brush hog is not that expensive. Having dependable equipment is priceless vs breakdowns in the middle of a job.

Seems Ironcraft is the major brand with the "independent" dealers (ie not Kubota/Deere) around here, but it seems like they all stock 1205 series standard duty. After I see what's at the two auctions, I might call around and see what a 1505 Ironcraft costs. Guess most people just buy the 1200 series?

This is one time where you should listen to your wife! Lol
If you plan on keeping the bush hog for years, DO NOT skimp on quality. You definitely want a rotary cutter that you won’t have to work on.
My top 2 choices would be Bush Hog, and Rhino AG. I’d buy IronCraft if they have a good medium duty cutter.
Like I said earlier, see what all your local tractor dealers carry and post back here what they have. We can help you choose a medium duty model out of the brands they sale.
If you buy a rotary cutter with an Omni gearbox, the gearbox will come with a 5 year manufacturer’s warranty.
The new Lowery Manufacturing (LMC) Andy 400 rotary cutter that I recently bought, has an Omni gearbox. It is a light duty cutter with a 12 gauge deck plate.
You would want the LMC Windspecial model for a Medium Duty cutter. It has a 7 gauge deck plate. Available in 5, 6, and 7 foot models with a shear pin or slip clutch PTO driveline.

Anyone mention Kodiak yet?
They build the medium duty Mahindra cutters.
I’ve cut 2.5” saplings with mine but I believe they are no longer $1800.
We’ve switched to Woods and yes, they are expensive but their supply chain is better and they are robustly built.
The expense of this thing should be based on how often are you needing it.
One of the problems of used is that they are often left outside to rot to say nothing of the gear box having coffee milk in it.

Only 5? I believe if you buy a Woods med. duty cutter, the gearbox has a 10 year warr..

So, since you mention it, the large auction I frequent, often has a lot of new Mahindra stuff; dealer bankruptcy type stuff. No, its not a steal, especially when you add fees/taxes/ect,

I have 2 BB60’s and they have been thru it and back and keep on going. What I love the most is the Tennessee River pull type their not the most heavy duty but get the job done. Id look for the one that has the least abuse signs and go with it and the end of the day it’s a Bush Hog not a finish mower😉

Im seriously considering a J-Bar 60" premium, at $1850; or a BH215 at $2500.

The specs on the JBar are good, 3" cut capacity, 7 ga, 40 hp gear box. Price is good. My hesitation is, the standard duty JBar doesn't have the best reviews.
