Marvel Mystery Oil

Don’t quote me on this but I have read that Stabil works by floating on top of gasoline and preventing air/moisture interacting with the fuel. I wonder if MMO works in the same manner.
No, Sta-bil does not float on top. It is fully miscible.

Is this stuff still made and marketed? Back in the 50s and 60s my FIL was a master mechanic. He worked for a auto parts/rebuild located in a farming/logging area. They did a huge business rebuilding engines for farming and logging equipment. In those days rebuilt components were not as popular as custom rebuilding. He was a popular consultant to fleet owners and even individuals. He claimed that engines he rebuilt that had used MMO were cleaner and contained no carbon residues compared to others that were usually gunked up badly.

He was and swore by MMO. Assembled all his engines and other components such as transmissions with MMO. He was very successful in selling it over the counter. in those days you could buy it in large containers; 5 gallon and even 55-gallon containers. The area had huge farms and logging operations with large fleets and even their own mechanics.

He had me using it in my vehicles. Never had anything long enough to establish a strong opinion.

I saw a youtube video then went out and tried it. Do not know whether it helps or not.
2006 Mercedes 5 cylinder diesel sprinter(No def) MH and 2014 chevy cruze diesel.
2 parts MMO and 1 part Howes Lubricant in the diesel fuel every fillup.
about 10 ounces in the 16 gallon tank and 16 ounces in the 26 gallon tank
19.3 miles to the gallon in the Heavy sprinter 2500 and 34 mpg overall in 85,000 miles
on the cruze last time i looked. (it has a button that tells you)
Been doing it a couple years now. I am sure it is helping lubricate the injector nozzles
but both just purr.
No Earthshaking news on it's performance to relate well except the Good News!

A friend gave me a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil? I remember it from the 1960's but I have never used it. Where do you use it and what is it good for?
I remember using it as an additive to regular oil in my dad's boat (which used a 357 Chevy 8 cyl engine). THis would have been in the 1970s.

It can be used as a upper cylinder lubricant when mixed with gasoline.

I do not normally go for snake oil products and considered MMO as one BUT it is definitely not snake oil. I now add it to every storage can of gas I have. I use Eagle Safety cans for my gas storage, they seal tight and have no worries about leakage during transport that happened occasionally with plastic containers. I keep about 50 gallons of gas on hand for the tractors, mowers, etc. and before I started adding MMO the gas would go bad. I had used MMO in the past for sticky valves as mentioned and since I had some on the shelf, that was getting pretty long in the tooth, decided to add it to the storage cans. Mainly to get rid of it. Best move I have ever made, have not had a can of ethanol laced stuff they call gas go bad since. I NEVER, at the end of season/use, run the carbs dry and leave the tanks full and even after some of the engines set for a year with the tank of gas they fire easily and run smoothly.

As an added bonus, that surprised me, I added some to the tank of my old 1992 GMC K3500 flatbed with a 7.4L for some valve noise and noticed that the gas mileage seemed like it was up. I keep meticulous records on all my vehicles pertaining to every drop of gas or oil added to them and after several tests running tanks of gas with and without MMO added it happened every time that the mileage was up by 1 to 2 miles per gallon with the MMO added. Doesn't sound like much but going from 10 mpg to just over 12 on that truck makes a worthwhile difference to me.
So, how much would "some" be, added to your fuel?
I remember it smelling rather sweet and pleasant, using it in air tools.

Many years ago an old man who was a GMC/Pontiac dealer told me, "Marvel Mystery Oil, it fixes sh*ts, fits and floppy ****"! I've got a can somewhere around if I can find it!

As somebody said "good for what ails ya". It is a top lube. I use it in the gas and add a little to the oil also. It will free stuck rings also. My brother had an old Buick that was given to him and it smoked like crazy so he used it in there and a couple tanks of gas later and it didn't use oil at all any more.

Guys... MMO is basically a thin lubricating oil (Like ATF) but includes Methyl Salicylate - That is "oil of wintergreen." That's the chewing-gum or "Life-Savers" smell you notice.

Methyl Salicylate DISSOLVES ferrous rust. I'm an old Navy guy and 50 years ago our NASU engineering publication ran a short article on the effectiveness of Methyl Salicylate to remove severely rusted hardware (salty sea-water really does a number on steel) - IT WORKS! It does NOT work on aluminum or stainless/aluminum dissimilar metal corrosion. The thin oil carries the methyl salicylate into the frozen hardware and given some time (and maybe a little heat) it will dissolve the rust and free the nut, bolt, shaft, etc.

I know not the percentage of methyl salicylate in Marvel Mystery Oil but I know from years of experience it does work on ferrous metals, like piston rings and cylinders and such. As an additive to fuel and crankcase it can't hurt.

my 2 cents worth...
