I'm not sure it's even in the widow's best interest at her age to have the stress of running the dealership.

Whether a particular dealer survives or not could depend on many factors such was whether farming is still a strong area of the economy in the region where the dealer is located. Any particular dealer's financial strength could also depend on how well the dealership has operated over the years. I'd say there are too many unknown variables to assess the strength of tractor sales without knowing more about the particular dealer's situation and that would mean having inside information on the dealer's financial strength, too.

I can think of a dealer started by a guy that was pretty good when he was alive to run it, but I'm not so sure his widow can handle it now that he's gone.
That happens a lot across all industry with family enterprise.

Most family businesses do not make it past the second generation for a variety of reasons.

I'm still getting called in to deliver new units as well as used ones and pick up trade in units as well and the shop is busy also. Been helping out a bit with wrenching, mostly combines presently.

I admire you for working into that job with your local dealer. You have the retirement gig many of us are looking for. It seems to work well for you, and I'm glad you're doing it.

Made it clear to the owner that it was NEVER to be a FT gig. Strictly on call but then I do, do stuff for them in my personal shop when required. Gets me away from my lovely wife and she appreciates it as well. After 35 years of 'matrimonial bliss', being away always seems to work for us.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder or is it out of sight out of mind?

For some of my retired friends it was as simple as a detached garage with a bathroom and washer dryer hook up.

One couple was having a rough go... he was career military so gone a lot and now retired.

They bought a place with land... his dream... but soon they were at odds.

She vetoed the shop idea until one of the older neighbor ladies told her it saved their marriage...

They both have their domains... he is around but not underfoot... and I don't have to wash old the soiled work clothes in my clean washing machine and no tracking into the house back and forth into the clean bathrooms and that goes for some of his friends...

They really are a great couple and she said the shop was the best investment they made... plus he has a place for all of his things.

Both the shop and the living area of our house are right there when you enter the front door. Turn left to go into the shop, or right into the rest of the house.

My wife once said “a tractor is an investment in time. The less time you spend on projects the more projects you can complete or you can give yourself time to rest.”

Equipment (shop or tractor or tool or gizmo) can almost always make the job go smoother and quicker with less chance of injury or additional broken parts.

She also wants me to have a bigger shop because she wants to turn wrenches too but she doesn’t do cold or hot weather very well. She needs a little more medium. So we both support having good spaces to work in and good equipment to do the work.

Does she have a sister?

As a parent of multiple teenagers, I can appreciate how she regrets creating her own rule. But I have to believe her rule will apply to the next few months. We have to be near peak debt in the debt-cycle. The further we drift the harder the correction will be.

For what it is worth, we got a new Bobcat dealer nearby. They had been doing repairs on cars, trucks and tractors. Now they have new and used tractors and equipment.

Your wife is a very smart woman. That IS true. I converted from round balers to large square balers a few years back. I would estimate it’s 2 to 3 times faster.
I knew it would save me some time, but wow it saved me a LOT of time. Now I use that time to do more other, off-farm work, which makes me more money. The square baler did have up-front costs and the tractor that pulls it uses more fuel though because it is larger.

If you use equipment to make a living, never underestimate the value of faster equipment that leaves you more time to do more work, or pursue other interests or just get more rest.

Kubota, Deere and MF all changed hands during COVID (taxpayer funded?) The bad boy shop now has white tractors on their lot. When I went by the Deere and Bobcat lot, they looked like inventory was not the issue.

When I retired 23 years ago my wife always went with me
when I went shopping or I went with her but we were always
together and we have our differences but they only lasted a
minute or so as we got along wonderful. If I had to do it all over
again I would have married her in a heart beat! Life is what
you make of it. Example: you can have the worst job in the
world and ***** and moan about it you go home unhappy now
on the other hand you poke fun at it you go home happy
You have heard people who pray to gether stay to gether
I have run into a lot of people who don't believe in GOD
and the LORD gave us a choice to believe or not to believe
according to the Bible we are in the end of time and everyone
will have to make a decision for or against no in between
