The bed should be checked for rot...
I notice that the safety covers are missing...make sure he has them...or don't let anyone outside the family operate it...

One advantage of a PTO driven unit...is you can use the spreader as a collection unit...then park it at the compost area and as the tractor sits stationary you can run the pto to empty the spreader onto the pile...
