Hi,

I'm sure this has been posted a number of times, but I'm new to the JD world and I need to buy a manual for my 1998 4200 with 420 loader. Any suggestions as to where is the best place to purchase the manual?

Thanks very much!

If you go to the Deere web site, you can view the manual for the 4210. Here's the link. Just click on the "LV4210H..." link.

That should get you started, but realize there have been changes since 1998.
As far as purchasing a manual or other technical publications, you can try e-Bay, but I suggest you hit the dealer. Most of the operator/shop manuals I've seen on e-Bay are aftermarket and, IMHO, not particularly good.

You can get a manual at the Deere dealer or by calling 1-800-522-7448. I bought operators, parts, and service manuals for a 1984 950 thru the 800 number. They are the same manuals you get at the dealer, but delivered in the mail. I did not check to see if there was any price difference between the two.

Is a 4200 basically the same as a 4210?

4210 is the same as the 4200, but with some upgrades since it's a newer model. Most of what you see in that online manual I'd linked will apply, but as mentioned, there will be some differences since the manual is for a newer version of the 42xx model.
If you buy a manual at the dealer's, you can get the correct manual as long as you tell them your year and maybe the serial number would be nice.
